Aventurine leans against the balcony railing, gold city light catching against the rings on his fingers. “You know,” he says, “most people would’ve requested a different room by now.”
Dr. Ratio looks up from his datapad just long enough to meet his eyes. “Most people,” he replies calmly, “are less tolerable than you.”
For a second, Aventurine forgets how to answer.
Ratio notices that too.
Dr. Ratio and Aventurine are sent by the IPC to Somnus-V, a planet whose economy runs on traded memories and emotion. As they navigate the upper district’s political elite, the two find themselves being constantly monitored in a society built around emotional vulnerability and psychological control. Meanwhile, Aventurine’s growing feelings for Ratio begin complicating a mission that was supposed to remain strictly professional.

It’s been ages since he’s had a wet dream. If this were Zhongli’s bed, he’d be embarrassed, but it’s not. It’s his, in the suite he rarely sleeps in anymore, since he’d rather be in Zhongli’s bed anyway.
He flops to his back, picking at his sticky pants and staring at the wet spot on the bed. “Huh.”
So, he pretends that didn’t happen. A week goes by. He forgets about the dream, letting it fade into the ether as dreams are wont to do—until he has another.
Childe starts dreaming about switching things up with Zhongli.

Zhongli, meanwhile, sits back in his chair, flabbergasted. “You mean to tell me in your twenty-odd years of life—” Childe corrects his age, clearly proud of his relative youth. “—you have never taken a lover?” He uses this turn of phrase deliberately, and it has the desired effect.
Childe’s face flames. “That’s—that’s not—” He clears his throat and lowers his voice. “We were talking about dating.”
“So you have done neither,” Zhongli says slowly.
Childe has always been too dedicated to the Tsaritsa to find time for intimacy. Zhongli changes that.

Normally that wouldn’t be anything of note, the problem was that Zhongli’s sensitive nose could smell how poorly the tea was made. A Jade Cloud green tea, a very delicate blend harvested from the fields in Qingce, one that should normally have a sweet aroma with a slight nuttiness to it. And while he could smell the undertones of what the tea should smell like, it was overpowered by a horrible bitterness.
“Childe,” he said, “your tea smells foul.”

Summary
The distance between them is only making the tension simmer hotter. Aventurine fumbles any ball that comes his way, too focused on glimpses of Ratio. Ratio fouls for the first time when he’s up to bat, and his pitches are getting sloppier and sloppier. He’s not looking at Aventurine, but his mind is clearly not on baseball anymore.
When the sixth inning ends, they meet in the middle of the diamond. Aventurine is a lot dirtier now, covered in grass stains. He’s sweating hard enough that his hair is limp and damp. Ratio isn’t fairing much better. They push their bodies together, heedless of the dirt, all but rubbing on each other like cats now. Ratio’s knuckles press firmly on Aventurine’s sweaty chest when he hands the bat over, hand curled around it unnecessarily. Direct contact. Aventurine shudders. So does Ratio.
The IPC and The Intelligentsia Guild play their annual, 'friendly' game of baseball, and Ratio and Aventurine subject everyone to the worst flirting of this Amber Era.

This is the sort of look Aventurine gives him when he answers faculty emails while Aventurine is trying to dazzle him with card tricks. Hungry and determined. It sends an embarrassing shiver down his spine, because he knows what follows. (Hands ghosting over his skin, an insisting mouth pressed to his throat. All of Aventurine’s greed turned on him, to the task of getting his attention back.)
His core clenches. Muscle memory. Pathetic classical conditioning. He's too tired for this. Aventurine snaps at a kindly offered hand but kicks your leg out from under you just to keep your eyes on him. He must have attention, all the attention in the world. It must never be positive
Aventurine sighs. “Are you really still sore about the nurse outfit joke?”
Ratio has been overworking himself. Aventurine is bored with his mandatory sick leave, in need of attention, and definitely not just trying to tire Ratio out so he'll stop worrying about him and get some sleep.
