Summary
For two years now Gaius had done the equivalent of a pantomime, soothing a venomous snake. The imperial serpent rose out of its basket; Gaius sang it back down in tempered tones. He reckoned himself a decent enough actor and good at all the sundry things actors also did, like crawling on his stomach in the basest fashion and walking normally after being sodomised.
Or: Caligula, nobody’s emperor (yet), goes in search of a father.

Summary
The front door shut him onto the porch. It was still sunny outside. He’d lost enough blood that he didn’t register the warmth. He deluded himself into imagining he’d heard the slam of the cab door, the song of someone swearing. He listed onto his side, and the midday sky was full of stars, the hunter scattered into swinging pinpricks of light.
Or: Gerard Keay and Michael Crew (ages sixteen through twenty-three), old stories, gravity, and seven years’ worth of things unsaid.

Summary
So who can hear a scream over Agent Santana bangin’ out the tunes? So who’s lookin’ out for you, gettin’ knifed in a back-corridor bathroom?
That’ll be you, Donia answers. Missed me so you came lookin’. Like a limb or your right hand, couldn’t do without me.
In the machine: turning cogs. Eighteen stitches. An all-enveloping, encroaching darkness. The next thing to kill you, and the hundred or so that came before.

You moved, did as they said. The scale of the weather was enough to encompass both of you. Two on the old bleachers, surrounded by the patter of rain on long aluminium seats, a perfect pair of strangers slowly soaking through to their centres.

They come to the locker room to lick their wounds. Alone, back to the gunmetal-black doors, sucking on their own lip like the pain could disappear.

Summary
“Jonathan,” Melanie says, with full contempt, stopping her physical assault on Gerry to start her verbal assault on Jon. “Just turn your head. There are, what,” a brief pause to count, so as to keep her criticism accurate and incisive, “six two-meter windows looking in. If he can’t infer that the place with all the books on shelves is the library, he wouldn’t be a threat to our society in the first place.”
“No,” Gerry says, thoughtful. “I think you should do a sign. It would be fantastic. Welcome to the M.A. Library. Enter to experience books older than your great-grandfather’s dick, and also maybe premeditated robbery.”
“Alright,” says Jon. “I get it. There was no reason to bully me about it. Christ.”

Summary
“‘Yes, well?’” Elias echoes back at him, sounding politely interested in that patronizing, I’m-your-patient-boss tone that’s proven a complete farce over and over again. As if there were anything proper about allowing an employee to climb into his lap.
“It’s… it’s your birthday.” Where should his hands go? Jon settles for bracing one beside Elias’s head, the other twisting Elias’s tie around his fingers, the red silk slipping like water between them until he has a good grip.
An eyebrow lifts. “So it is.”

Summary
The wind rustles through the grass. The truck’s engine ticks as it cools, keeping time; a flock of starlings flutters overhead, perching for a half-second on the telephone wires that stretch past Conner’s house before they take off again, heading north.
Conner puts two patties on the grill.
