Summary
The Cait/Mel/Ambessa fight scene had me in a chokehold so I had to write it. Starts from Cait waking up after Maddie knocks her out and ends at Ambessa's death.
It took a few seconds for Cait to realize what happened, why her body had locked up so completely. In her mad high of adrenaline and rage, she didn’t feel the pain right away. But in the next heartbeat it came searing up her nerves, white-hot and blinding, narrowing her world to nothing but the place Ambessa’s hand had met her body.
“Desperation is the doorway to oblivion, child,” Ambessa spat derisively into her ear, holding her weight for a beat more before letting her slide unceremoniously to the ground. She fell to her knees, barely noticing as they hit the stone with a painful thud. All she felt was a single point of searing pain, lanced through her side in a spike of intense, concentrated agony that pushed out all other sensation, set her eyes wide and chest shuddering as she gasped for breath around the most intense sensation she’d ever felt. She stared ahead, releasing a sound somewhere between a gasp and a sob. Her hand found her abdomen, covering the warm metal handle of the dagger now lodged there, and Cait realized she was going to die.Series
