Hange couldn't see his face, the poor boy had been mutilated and burnt from the sheer power contained within the thunder spears shot his way. In a sick sense, that's exactly what it'd been made to do. The sole purpose of such destructive weaponry was to slip past his defenses, to penetrate the thick armor that protected him. It had worked excellently, if not obvious by the state he'd been left in. Hange had worked hard to make sure that was the case.
Once again, their brilliant mind had given Humanity another edge against titan-kind.
A bandage was wrapped around his head like a blindfold of sorts. There was no expression to read, no eyes to look into—just a low, gravelly voice that finally spoke.
".. Professor, what are you doing?"

It came to a surprise to him when he'd eventually came to realize a crucial aspect when it came to their outspoken nature. Something so terribly easy to miss, subtle in-nature. Erwin's confident enough not even they are aware of it, oblivious to this habit that'd been grating on his nerves since he noticed. He wouldn't be surprised if that were the case, for Hange could be as air-headed as she was keenly intelligent.
He supposed he could let it go if only for now. It wouldn't take too long to coax realization out of them.
Hange would understand soon.

Reaching out, he rubs circles by the back of her neck, taking in the dim flame before him. She'd always been bright, enough so to catch the eye of everyone around them, an ember that refused to die out no matter how much you tried to. A candle that could only continue to eat itself up till there was nothing left but a wisp of fire, fighting to stay lit; fighting to keep going.
A fire so self-contained there was only one person it could burn.
If only they'd let him carry that torch, too.

Summary
The Zoë family was not one to stand out too much from within a crowd. Middle-class, two parents working jobs that allowed them the relief of being– at the very least –financially stable in an age where money was hard to come by. There wasn't much about them that caught anyone's eyes, and if you were to ask, they'd tell you that was the point. Normalcy was the goal, and they wouldn't have had it any other way.
Hange was the only one out of them who'd tell you outright that she thought the idea of normalcy was 'stupid'.

Grace's journey to Erid is long and taxing. 4 whole years spent on the Hail Mary by Rocky's side has inevitably brought them closer together, despite the last year mostly consisting of Grace trying his very best not to die and keep himself from throwing up taumoeba into the bathroom. It’s only after his body has stopped fighting desperately for his life that his mind has the time to catch up on everything that has happened with Rocky…and on Earth without him. It doesn’t help that he’s going to be the only human on a planet of Eridians and that his best friend’s mate doesn’t seem to like him much at all.
