Luxury and privilege are the typical spoils that Spherites indulge in, and these Masaru has grown to know intimately throughout his life.
His preparation for his new role as magistrate is one of these spoils, something he didn’t earn, but was merely expected of him. Magistrates were revered, respected. They kept their lovely city safe from those detestable tribesfolk, and punished them accordingly. To become one was an honor, one he was sure he deserved.
But his path, once narrow and certain, seems to shift as he creates a device, a mere trifle for his own amusement.
A gleaming marionette who stands as his undoing.

Summary
A necessary precaution.
Darkness oozed out of every open orifice, spilling through crevices like water sputtering up through cracked geyser, dripping down his nose, flooding from his ears in a rush.
Shadows cut across his form like physical wounds, stripes of darkness creeping across his flesh like worms. Pooling around his feet as an endless hollow, eager to accept him into its fold.
He was laying—no, he was standing. Standing over a misshapen heap, its features pale and bruised beyond all recognition, lips parted in a cry that never came, suspended in a moment of anguish.
How, he wondered, did he ever mistake it for a man.
His lips pursed, nudging it with the heel of his boot, its shaggy mane parting over its brow, its eyes cast off to some distance place. Heaven would accept neither of them.
Here, he can see every discrepancy. Every error. Each foolish attempt at replication that fell flat before his eyes.
His hand wandered to his ear, feeling the slope of the wound there. One perfectly mimicked by this pathetic copy.
This was necessary.

Summary
Aether cast his eyes to the sky overhead, an endless expanse of darkness teeming with stars.
Teeming with stars.
False gods hung by interlopers to dictate the realities of innocent humans. To think, not one of them had ever glimpsed the real sky, had ever torn past the veil and seen a slither of what lay beyond the barrier. To think he had glimpsed them, only once in his fleeting descent, and couldn’t even dredge up the memory.
“Have you ever wondered what’s beyond here?” He managed, tearing his eyes from what lay above him, suddenly feeling quite ill.
Varka arched a brow, his shadow stretching over the rocks behind them. “Beyond Nod-Krai? Or beyond Teyvat itself?”
“Teyvat.”
“Can’t say I have,” he admitted, turning his gaze to what masqueraded as the heavens. “Have you?”
“I never stopped.”
OR, Aether and Varka speak of the sky, and briefly touch on a past better left unsaid.
