Summary
Steve leans against the side of the boathouse and lets Eddie fumble with the cheap Bic lighter for a minute before he clears his throat and says, “You want a light?”
It's hard to read his tone. There's a bitter, suspicious, self-defensive part of Eddie that wants to lash out, but instead he grips the lighter until the plastic creaks and says, “Sure. If you have one.”
“Yeah.” Steve digs in his pocket and comes up with a nice Zippo. He doesn't hand it to Eddie; instead, he flicks the flame on and holds it out for him to lean down, and there's an intimacy to it that Eddie wasn't quite expecting. Like one of those old Leyendecker paintings. He imagines this tableau sketched out in clean art deco lines: the prom king and the freak. A study in contrasts.

“No one’s going to be looking for you here, if they’re even still looking. It’s safe,” Steve said.
His hand was still around Steve’s wrist, tethering him in place. His fingers were over Steve’s pulse, and Steve felt impossibly nervous all of a sudden. It was the adrenaline of the day. It was his spotty memory. That was all.
“No, I mean…is it okay with you?” Eddie said.
He didn’t need to say more. Steve was often slow on the uptake, but he could put this much together. Not long ago Steve and Eddie had barely known each other. Not long ago Eddie only knew him as that popular asshole who crashed and burned right out of high school and Steve knew Eddie as the drug dealing D&D freak who had charmed the hell out of Henderson, but somehow couldn’t charm his way to a high school diploma.
Steve swallowed, thickly. “‘Course it’s okay. I’m the one who offered,” he said.

Summary
They care, Steve repeats to himself. They care. People care about him. It’s not ideal, but it’s something. He can work with it. Nobody’s ever been voted Prom King after they had a breakdown in the parking lot during study hall.

Robin hates boys. This guy’s voice sounds just as annoying as her crying does, though, so at least it isn’t just her being victimized by the bathroom tiles.
