Summary
he looks at her. she doesn’t know how he heard her voice through the noise, but maybe she shouldn’t be surprised; it’s him. he’s always heard her, no matter how metaphorically or literally improbable it seemed.
(or, a collection of short fics for frank langdon and melissa king.)
written for kingdonmicrofic's july 2026 event.

Summary
they don’t use a condom the first time they have sex.
it’s not an intentional decision – she honestly didn’t even think of it. they were both so wrapped up in each other, in the moment, in the fact that this was finally, finally happening, that protection was the furthest thing from their minds.
plus, neither of them had slept with anyone for awhile; he revealed that it’d been nearly a year and a half since he’d had sex with abby, even though they’d only separated nine months ago. (one of the many signs our marriage was dead in the water, he’d told her, with a wry smile on his face.)
and mel? well, mel had never slept with anyone. technically.
(or, mel and frank deal with an unplanned pregnancy.)

Summary
he’s careful with mel in a way that he never was with abby. not because he thinks she’s too delicate, or made of glass, or unable to handle herself. he just…he can’t fuck this up. she’s the most important thing that’s ever happened to him, alongside tanner and penny. he can’t fuck any of this up.
still, he can't protect her from this.
(or, mel and frank struggle with infertility issues.)

Summary
he's put in place three rules for himself since returning to the emergency department: be transparent when handling drugs, spend as much time with mel as possible, and stay out of trinity santos' business.
he doesn't mean to break rule three. he really doesn't.
(or, mel and santos try to be friends. it doesn't go as well as they had hoped.)

Summary
This was never how she pictured this going.
She thought she’d be married, or at least in a long term relationship.
Mel King never imagined finding out she was pregnant in the hospital bathroom after hooking up with a coworker two months ago.
Or, whoopsie baby.

Summary
She watches him strut around headquarters, trying to look confident and purposeful as he searches for a reason to be there—orbiting Mel, while being quietly consumed by something she isn't sure he has the cojones to face.
Trinity sighs, weighing her vendetta against Mel's happiness. She really is getting a martyr complex, just like the rest of these sick fucks.
(Kingdon, reluctantly witnessed and orchestrated by Trinity Santos, who kinda has her own thing going on and doesn't need this right now)

Summary
He doesn’t know why he does it, says, “Let me,” and gestures for her to turn around. He thinks she’ll wave him off, tell him not to worry, that she can do it herself.
But she doesn’t.
She turns around so her back is to him, and he takes a step closer, reaching up to grab onto her braid, slowly sliding the hair tie off.
He puts it on his wrist, next to the one he already has on, and the plait almost falls apart on its own, but he can’t help putting his hands in her hair, undoing the braid and running his fingers through the strands gently.
“There you go,” he says quietly once her hair is loose around her shoulders.
She sighs and leans into him, her back against his chest, and tilts her head to rest on his shoulder.

Summary
"Try here," he directs. Her hand caresses his nape before her fingers find his carotid. She bites her lip.
"Hey," she murmurs. "You're a bit tachy, yourself. But you haven't had very much." She motions to his deserted beer.
His eyes drop to her lips and he swallows. "Probably something else, then. Maybe you need a new differential diagnosis."
Her face heats and a strange warmth pools in her gut. This is dangerous. She needs to move back. She can stop things before they get weird. Before she makes them weird. She removes her hand from his neck. Her fingers tip toe their way up Frank's tie and hesitantly land on his chin. She traces her pinky along his lower lip. She tracks its movement, catching the bob of his Adam's apple in her periphery.
