“Do you know where you want it?”
Adam does know. He knew that before he knew exactly what design he’d settle on. He wants it to go in that place where Ronan always seems to be holding on to him for dear life.
The night of their first kiss, after everyone else was gone, Ronan had looked at him across the porch and said his name with such tender anticipation and hope that it answered all of the questions swirling around in Adam’s overworked mind. He’d practically launched himself at Ronan, like he was jumping into a lake, and Ronan had caught him about the waist and held him close while they explored the tilting, drowning feeling of it together. And ever since, whenever Ronan needs Adam he holds him there, fingers curled tightly just above his hip, grounding Adam and steadying him and keeping him upright when everything else in the world seems to want to knock them both down.
He pulls up his shirt and grips at that place where their connection always feels like it runs through him at its strongest and most steady. “About here?”

“Yeah? Which was the big guy downstairs? Because my good Catholic upbringing didn’t make the distinction.”
Out of nervous habit, Ronan brings his wrist up to his mouth and chews on the leather bands there. He’s been wearing them and chewing on them since he was sixteen. It’s a wonder there’s anything left to them at all. He feels the same way about his good Catholic upbringing.
“I think,” Adam says, quiet now. “That he wasn’t very nice, but that he wasn’t ever given a reason to be. I think it was self-defense.” It’s an explanation that sounds both close to home and far away. He looks up and out the window. His gaze gets caught there, distracted for the first time since they started.
Ronan looks as well, but it’s dark out now and all he can see is the shadow box reflection of the room against the black behind. Set against the rest of it, Adam’s hunched over reflection looks small and dark. Ronan is little more than a few swaths of stark negative space cut against the white glow. Neither of them has a halo.
(Or, that one where Adam is an art major and Ronan agrees to model for a sculpture of Satan.)

“Anyway, a little bit about me: I’m a law student and I am originally from –“ Ronan makes a rude noise, so Adam stops talking and instead just asks, “What?”
“Nothing, no. It’s just very telling that’s what you start with.” Ronan says with a grin that makes Adam’s eyes narrow. “Fuck, Declan’s gonna love that. Any chance you can convince him you voted for Trump?”
Adam just keeps staring at him until he shrugs and looks away, “Hmm, it was worth a shot.”
“So if it’s not to impress your family with my glowing CV, then why am I here?”
“Blue said she had a friend who was willing to do this and that you were hands – ah.” He pauses awkwardly and very resolutely keeps his eyes on the road, “Would be handsomely paid for your services. You know how she cares about shit like that.”
“Right, right.” Adam drawls.
or, Ronan needs a date, Adam needs the money - somehow, they make it work.

“What the hell is this, Lynch?”
Adam stands at the bedside table, slouched forward, wearing only a thin t-shirt and boxer briefs. His somewhat broad shoulders, tapering into a much slimmer waist, block whatever it is he’s looking at, but Ronan doesn’t need to see. Only one thing wasn’t there before this morning and, at the realization, red-hot embarrassment spreads from his cheeks all the way up to his ears.
“Uh, ears,” Ronan replies casual-like, turning his back to Adam to pick through his dresser. He doesn’t need anything, but it’s the only way he can think of to hide his blush. “Cat ears, I guess.”

Noah decided to pipe in. “Like she said. Disgusting.”
That was what made Adam and Ronan determined to prove that they could keep their damn hands to themselves.
