“You know,” Hanbin said conversationally, “you're not very good at pretending that I'm not a vampire.”
Hao’s blood ran cold.
His hand was in his jacket pocket and the dagger was out and driving toward Hanbin's chest before the decision finished forming.Or: Zhang Hao is a witch, and to save his best friend's life, he needs to perform a ritual.

Hao wets his lips. “I… I’m engaged,” he says. He holds his breath so that he doesn’t immediately take back what he’s said.
A moment passes.
And then another.
When Waipo still doesn’t say anything, he keeps forcing words out of his mouth. “It’s a bit of a—well, you know. We were going to wait a while, but since you… since… since we’d like for you to be there, I’ll talk to him about pushing it up.”
“But, Hao… who is this man you’re marrying? I didn’t know you were even seeing anyone.”
The strangest part about all of this is that the moment she asks, the name every single man he’s ever known falls out of his head, unreachable. Except for one.
“Hanbin.”
“Hanbin? Our Hanbin?”
“I—” His mouth is dry. “Yes.”
