He had grown used to the certain loneliness brought about by his magic. Keeping distance, in both action and feeling, is commonplace for him. After the death of his cross-eyed comrades, he throws himself into work, set on what he’s good at: avoidance.
It’s all well and good until you stumble into Nikaido’s diner, a slightly embarrassed grin on your face and a crumpled job application in hand. He takes one look at you and that dumb smile and is suddenly reminded of the gaping hole in his chest.
