Summary
Deputy Shane Walsh was the first on the scene during the worst day of my life.
The first time he saw me, I was lying half-conscious in the King County High hallway with my favorite white blouse soaked with blood. He saw the bruises, how scared I was, and everyone staring like I was something embarrassing they wished they could step over.
After that, he started seeing everything else too.
He saw the way people treated me at school. He heard the way people talked about me. He noticed the way my parents blamed me for things that weren’t my fault. He saw the way I tried to act okay when I wasn’t okay at all.
He was completely off limits, and I knew it better than anyone. He was a handsome, broad-shouldered deputy with a shaved head and that deep Georgia drawl, twice my age and way out of my league. I was just an eighteen-year-old overweight girl that nobody wanted around, but none of that stopped me from needing him more and more every single day.
But the most unbelievable thing was that I was starting to think he needed me too…

The railing runs around the perimeter of the western guard tower, like a widow's walk, where he stands, keeping watch. He takes a final drag on his cigarette, then drops it onto the cement floor, crushing it under the toe of his boot.
There are two other cigarette butts lying beside it.
