Lucien leaned back in his chair at the comment and gave it a beat before he cocked his head towards Essek with a leering smile on his face. He folded his arms, keeping his eyes resting on Caleb while directing his next comment to his right.
“He’s attractive when he’s condescending.”
He was rewarded by an immediate stiffening of Essek next to him and a flush across Caleb’s face as he coughed and turned away. The tension up the back of Essek’s neck was clear, and his long ears twitched back slightly. Smiling more widely, Lucien turned to look at Essek, who resolutely didn’t meet his gaze.
“Feisty as well, isn’t he? Hungry for knowledge. Always about books and learning. He said as much himself. Is that how he wound you in?”

Lucien picks up on the unspoken tension between Essek and Caleb and uses it to his advantage. Set shortly after E122 Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained.

With one final phrase, the spell is complete,and the twice stolen beacon resting on his desk flares brightly, flooding the room with searing light and an overwhelming rush of energy, an intangible force that nearly knocks Bren off his feet. As the energy recedes, he waits, preparing to be ripped from this moment and thrust into the annals of time, but nothing happens. He frowns. Waits. But still nothing happens, and as he begins double checking his notes, scattered as they are across his work surface, suddenly, he’s struck with an intense arcane force, like a punch to the chest. He recoils, blinks instinctively and once his vision clears, finds himself standing in his bedchambers. As he takes stock of the world around him, his brain recalibrates, and a sense of dread congeals in his stomach. His sense of time has never been wrong before, so it can’t be now.
It’s 6am on the 9th of Quen’Pillar. Again.
“Shit.”
Caleb and Essek get stuck in a time loop, and have to work together to get out of it.

“The Dynasty does not do marriage. You know how it is,” Caleb says firmly. His cheeks are growing pink. “What I am offering is a long-term alliance between two nations.”

Be advised that if you are actively avoiding angst, and characters being successfully manipulated by narcissistic abusive parents, skip chapters 15-24 of this fic. A massive angst bomb gets dropped partway through chapter 16, and the repercussions reverberate prominently for the next ten chapters. The mood whiplash from the adorable rom com & found family vibes of the earlier chapters is extreme. Take care of yourselves.
