Thomas Jopson is not, in fact, quite all right. He feels himself sway, extends his hand to steady himself against nothing, and tries to recall the question he’s just been asked.
“I asked if you are quite all right,” Crozier repeats. His face swims into focus, the coarse-hewn and ruddy handsomeness of it.
“Quite, sir,” Jopson lies. He is—not unwell, exactly. Quite the opposite, in fact. He feels elated, expectant, like a child on his birthday. A fever, must be.

He has a clear view of the marine between the two stacks of trunks, and is certain that he himself would not be seen unless Tozer looked carefully in his direction. And anyway, there’s not much light: if his presence might be made out his identity would not be, and besides, he’s—curious. In most men, such an appetite for knowing what others are up to would be deemed a sin by The Almighty, but Irving is only ever interested so that he may strive to correct whatever shortcomings he may witness. He’ll brook no shirking, for example, and that is what he suspects Tozer is up to as he lays a cigarette paper neatly on his thigh, pays a little tobacco out onto it, and lifts it to his tongue to lick the seal. Irving watches carefully the nimble movements of his large, well-proportioned hands, the raw, bright dart of his tongue, and finds himself—in an effort to stay silent, of course—breathing a bit more shallowly.

Devotion to his Captain notwithstanding, Thomas Jopson gets mixed up in the grizzled ice-master’s seduction of an innocent young AB.
“You both must be more discreet,” said Thomas as he set himself to neatening Hartnell’s hair. “If the Captain catches you, you’ll be flogged for dirtiness.”
There was a sting there, but it was not for the Thomas of the present to feel. Such private anguishes might be indulged early in the morning or just before bed (or, say, when watching the flesh be flayed from Hickey’s backside), but were unfit for working hours.
“Our Frank?” scoffed Blanky. “Doesn’t sound like the man I know.”
