“Just be there,” Koga had said, and, well, Ritsu’s trying, but being there isn’t as easy as it sounds. It’s not just him being a useless brother, he tells himself, even if the thought is hazy in his mind as if he believes (knows) it’s a lie. It’s not, because he’s seen the way Leo, too, is duller some days, and Izumi can only sit there and wait for it to be okay again. Because, for all his flaws, Ritsu knows Izumi is anything but a useless partner.
It doesn’t matter, though, Ritsu tells himself, because even if he’s a useless brother, Rei was first.

He paused for a split second, and all of a sudden Kaoru knew what was coming. The realization hit him like a freight train, and he wasn’t fast enough to tell Rei to stop, to force the words back into his mouth so they weren’t spoken into existence, as if maybe the truth could be forestalled for another time, another day, when Kaoru was prepared, but his plea came too late.
“...attending my omiai.”
Kaoru’s mind went white.
