The guy jumped, like, a million feet in the air. Zook immediately felt bad for startling him. "Sorry!" he said quickly, dropping his gym bag on the ground and offering his hand. "I'm Zook, your roommate. I didn't mean to sneak up on you like that."
"Oh..." Luke exhaled and laughed nervously. "No, it's fine... um." He shook Zook's hand. "Yeah, I'm Luke. Nice to meet you."

"I saw a man lay with a wolf once. Guy drags a full grown, feral wolf on a choke-chain into his room. Ties it up to the bed. Then takes off all his clothes, climbs in bed beside it, and holds the thing all night. Like, it wasn’t sexual, but it wasn’t not sexual, either. Guy just lay there crying. Saying ‘help me’ while he held that wolf. All night."
Miles had shared that story under duress, ironically to prove that he could keep a secret. He was full of people's secrets: dirty, filthy things that people did to one another (or themselves) when they thought no one was watching.
The man laying with the wolf wasn't filthy, though. Just strange.
And sad.
The woman with the shotgun hadn't budged. She probably thought he'd squeal as soon as she and her sister left the El Royale.
What she didn't know was that there was more to that wolf story.
A lot more.

"No, he isn't." As if summoned by her name, Yelena entered the common area and took a seat on the couch on the other side of John. "Walker is right, he is not letting us see what is on his Switch anymore. I'm worried, too."

The Void did not respond, other than to creep closer, its many eyes observing Cooper intently. "You are ashamed," it said. "But you are not afraid. Why?"
Cooper placed a hand over his steadily beating heart. It was true, he felt calmer than he had in a long time. "I don't know, you're... you're scary-looking, yeah, but you're not something that my mind made up. You're real."
"I am more than 'scary-looking'." The Void's tentacles writhed, as if agitated. "I am darkness incarnate. I have been feared across time and space for eons. I am a monster."
"A monster who saved me from the spiders," Cooper couldn't help but point out.

Summary
John was fortunate — his super soldier physiology had kept him from transforming into some mindless, hairy beast — but that's where his fortune had ended.
Because now he was officially off-duty for the stupidest reason possible.
"Aww, don't mope, Walker. I think you look cute."
John glared at Yelena, who had stayed with him in the medical bay until he was cleared to join everyone else in the debriefing room. "I am not cute," he growled, teeth bared.
"Not when you are making that face, no," she replied, totally unfazed. "But the ears and tail are nice."
John grumbled, his ears drooping. Because that's what his ears could do now. His stupid floppy dog ears that looked like two bent over triangles on top of his head, and his stupid furry dog tail sticking out behind him. "This sucks."
