Mydei raises a brow, then, narrows his eyes.
“Bet on what?” he asks suspiciously, not unlike how one pokes a sleeping tiger.
“Bet that you can plan better dates,” Phainon says. “That you’re a better lover.”
Mydei scoffs.
“Against that male alpha? Any decent human being would win.”
Phainon pauses, an idea forming in his head. And it’s such a bad idea. Such a stupid idea. But, it could be fun. And Mydei has always indulged his stupid ideas.
“What about against me?” he asks.
(Phainon and Mydei have always been known for their competitions. It's the basis of their almost four year friendship. There's no reason they can't also compete over who's the better date either.)

And as the wave of rage washes over him, fierce and ever-sharp, he catches sight of it: the darkness that has been tearing him away closing all around him, suffocating him. Furious, heartbroken, he tries to scream, and as he does the lines of code choking him begin to glow the dull red of hot metal. He tears at them with his hands, ripping them away; they cling to his body like spiderwebs, growing ever brighter.Phainon is faintly aware of Mydei shouting, but that is happening somewhere else. Here, in the dark, he sees only one thing: a single line of blinking red code that makes his blood freeze solid.

Mydei paused, suspicious. He straightened up and raised an eyebrow. “I don’t know. What?”
Phainon’s grin turned wicked. He stepped closer, voice dropping into a husky murmur.
“Because I’m gonna plow both of you thoroughly… and then plant my seeds real deep.”
Mydei stared at him for a second, stunned. Then he let out a loud, incredulous laugh, cheeks flushing despite himself.
“Oh my God,” he groaned, covering his face with one dirty glove. “That was terrible. Absolutely horrible.”

After burning out, Mydei retreats to a coastal village with no plan beyond silence. Until the local delivery man starts showing up more than necessary, who had way too many side hustles to count.
