You nodded slowly, tongue darting over chapped lips. You saw his eyes flick to the motion. He didn't linger, but he saw it.
The tension between you had been building for months. It lived in the spaces between words, hidden beneath discipline, professionalism, and the unspoken understanding that neither of you could afford distractions. You were his sergeant.
