“Weel,” Jamie took a deep breath and rubbed the pad of his thumb across his bottom lip as he thought of what he wanted to say. What he should say. “I was there-”
“You were there?”
“Aye,” Jamie nodded slowly as the image of young Fergus lying on the hard Scottish ground, blood staining the dirt beneath his wrist, clouded his vision. The same feeling that had gripped his throat then, gripped him now, somehow even tighter than before. “I was there.”

With dinner time that much closer, they really ought to start packing up before making their way downstairs but when she looked at the children all she could see was the serene dream-like smile on Faith’s face, the way Brianna swung around the room dancing to music only she could hear and the the look of reverence in Fergus’s eyes as the fiddled with the jewelled buttons of Jamie’s mist blue waistcoat.
She couldn’t possibly take that away from them. And so, there was only one thing for it.
