    Summary

“I wish he didn’t care about me so much. It’s gonna really hurt when I die.”
“Why would you say something like that, question?”
“I dunno. I guess I don’t think I should really mean much to him. I mean, we were stuck in a spaceship together for a while, sure. But that was a forced proximity thing. I don’t expect him to be by my side every second of the day just because of that. I can’t believe he’s not sick of me by this point. Honestly, I wouldn’t blame him if he left and never came back.”
    Adrian is silent.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Chap 42. Grace and Rocky are severely codependent, and being apart puts both of them through sever mental distress. Grace has developed a mild bulimic disorder on top of his depression. Adrian finally got Grace and Rocky to communicate after their argument. During their discussion, the Eridians realize just how badly Grace has been doing, and that Grace has been lying to them about it. They're communicating!!!

     -----

“What haven’t you already said, question?” I ask. I shuffle in place, worried. It’s easy for me to forget how soft and fragile Grace is, and I don’t want to crush it. I’m so happy I get to be close enough to it that I can lay on its chest and hold its face in my hands. I hope that never stops.

“I didn’t want to be away, you know that, but also… I thought if you came back I wouldn’t have the will to encourage you to go do normal Eridian stuff. And, uh, I guess I figured some day you’d get sick of me and leave, and that I’d rather it happen sooner rather than later,” Grace mutters. Adrian makes an approving sound at its honesty and rewards it with a hand rubbing its belly. Or maybe that’s just Adrian, wanting to touch more and naturally choosing their favorite part of Grace. “I’m sorry, bud. I know what we have isn’t healthy, but neither is complete separation. Adrian said they’ll help us fix it over time. I’m sorry I made you go through that.”

“Please don’t ever do it again. That’s all Rocky asks,” I whisper, burrowing into Grace as far as I can.

“I knew you were giving me space and I should’ve told you that I wasn’t that angry at you. I didn’t actually need space. The argument made me pretty mad, but I knew you didn’t mean any of it. I just didn’t know how I’d face you after saying such awful stuff back, and when Adri said you were torn up over it, I felt even worse,” Grace says, lip wobbling. I see fluid begin to excrete from its tear ducts. “I just wanted to help you, but in the end I just hurt you,” Grace whispers as its tears drip down its face.

“Rocky forgive, Rocky forgive as soon as Grace say. Don’t cry. We fix. I love you, Grace.” I use two hands to wipe its tears away. It cranes its head forward until it can press its forehead against my carapace. It hums at the warmth I produce, turning to press its cheek to me.

“I love you too, Rock. That’ll never change.”

I wasn’t lying when I said I don’t like being dishonest to Grace. That won’t stop being true. I feel truly awful for not admitting it, because Grace deserves to know the exact nature of my love for it. But I can’t. Not when I know it’ll never love me the same way. At least I can be here for it. That’s what matters most.

“It’s not good for humans to be alone,” Grace says. “But it’s even less good for people like me. Remember all that stuff I explained about human genders?”

“Yes, yes,” Rocky grumbles. “Rocky cannot forget. Human design confusing. So many variant. Grace type that is worse to be alone.”

    “Yeah. Omega.”

    Summary

“Always think,” Rocky shifted his ball closer, bumping into Grace’s shoulder. Grace bumped it back, lips quirking up. “Think, think, think. Human brain never shut off. What Grace think about, question?”

Grace went quiet for a moment and looked away. “Uh, my… ‘mate.’ Back on Earth. I remember I had one.”

A series of happy little squeaks and chirps erupted from Rocky, his claws waving in frantic little jazz hands. He must have been excited to realize Grace had someone waiting for him back at home. Grace still didn't have the heart to tell him the truth, and likely never would. He shakes the thought away and focuses, eyes half-lidded and flickering back toward Rocky. The display pulled a genuine smile from Grace, though he wasn’t sure there was anything happy about the man back on Earth who grabbed him like a dog.

    Chap 10

Grace didn’t look at him. He couldn’t. If he looked, he would think about how Rocky said he was his. And how, in turn, Grace called him by Mark’s name. And right now, the only thing keeping Grace moving was the certainty that if he stopped…

He might never be able to tell Rocky that he felt the same.

That he’d never be able to apologize again and again until Rocky accepted it.

The cockpit was so far away, it felt impossible to climb all the ladders, move through the hatches and stumble his way into the pilot’s chair. He barely managed it, motivated only by the sheer willpower to keep Rocky alive and save both their planets. If they were hurdling toward Adrian like Mary said they were… there wasn’t much time before they succumbed to the pressure and heat of the planet and went out in a fiery all of death. Not how Grace wanted to die. Not that he wanted to die at all, but he did have his preferences.

Time passed by in a blur and before he even realized it, he was falling into the back of the captain’s chair, gripping onto it for dear life as his legs gave out. Rocky came clambering into the cockpit behind him in his ball, ramming into the co-pilot’s seat with urgency.

    “Grace! What’s happening?!”

“I-I don’t know! We seem to be-...” He clambering into seat as he yelled over the alarm. He blinked the fuzziness out of his eyes as he glanced over every screen. Orbital decay warning, atmospheric drag detected, manual override required… what the hell? “We’re falling into Adrian!”

Rocky made a series of alarmed noises, shooting around his ball in a blur. “How, question?! How?! Ship was in Adrian orbit!”

    “I-I don’t…”

The numbers blurred. All he knew was that they were falling. Not fast, but the low orbit they had been holding had begun to slip. Why? Some micro-meterorite pinging them a few hours ago, maybe? Or a faulty thruster that knocked them out of orbit and toward Adrian’s gravitational pull? Nonsense, all of it. Grace couldn’t ask why right now. The ship was kissing the upper edge of Adrian’s atmosphere sooner than they planned, and Grace needed to get everything in order now if they had any chance of survival and completing the mission.

It had to be done now. If something was wrong with the ship, they couldn't wait weeks or even months to repair it just to try again. Earth and Erid didn’t have that kind of time.

Which meant he had to position the ship at a forty-five degree angle… backwards. Let the predator catcher go. Go out on the hull, retrieve it… and get them out safely.

All while a little high and definitely suffering from a concussion.

Grace’s stomach lurched. The panic he felt was almost muffled. He was supposed to be asleep. He just wanted to sleep.

His heart suddenly felt too loud in his ears. This was it. Everything they had been working towards amounted to this moment, and Grace wasn’t even sure he could do it. But he had to. Because he chose to do this, and somewhere along the line he knew he could. He had been brave back then, he could be brave now. He couldn’t disappoint Earth after volunteering himself to go- it wasn’t fair.

Stratt deserved to know her hard work paid off.

    His kids deserved to live.

The ship lurched again and Grace closed his eyes to ward off the rising nausea. He looked over toward Rocky, who was trying to balance his ball despite the turbulence.

That anger he felt earlier- hot and fast- was nothing compared to what he felt now. A deep-seated devotion to getting Rocky home safe. He was still hurt- it was feeding off his flesh and making his bones impossibly heavier. But the way Rocky was looking at him- desperate, despite not having the face to express it- shoved that hurt away. He could focus on it later, when they weren’t risking imminent death. He wanted to apologize for yelling. For pushing. For not sleeping through the pill and using that as a reason as to why he let his anger get the best of him.

    But the words wouldn’t come.

When this was all over, they’d return to their respective planets and never see each other again.

Maybe that was for the best.

Rocky’s voice was quiet. His translator was no longer working from the turbulence but Grace understood him. “Time go fishing, question?”

Grace’s body rocked sideways like he was going to fall. His hand snapped out to grip the joystick. He swallowed down bile.

    “Time go fishing.”
