Summary
Gerard stopped being a person somewhere between Baltimore and Philadelphia.
It happened on every tour - the slow erasure, the blur of cities and faces until nothing felt real anymore. He hadn't slept in days. Maybe weeks. He'd stopped being able to tell the difference.
Then he saw him: front row, stage left, completely still in a sea of screaming fans. A man who watched Gerard like he was looking at an accident. Like he couldn't look away. Like he didn't want to be there but couldn't leave.
Gerard got it.
For twenty-eight shows, Gerard would look for that spot. He'd leave offerings. He'd chase after proof that the man was real. He'd fuck him in the dark and never learn his voice until it was too late.

Maybe he was always kind of buzzed, but G was funny. He got along with everyone. Hanging with him and Mikey together was a real treat, like they could read each other's minds but were also constantly busting each other’s balls.
It wasn’t his problem.
But when G left his hand on Frank’s thigh a little too long, or sunk his head onto his shoulder, or told him he was looking handsome, or begged Frank to jump on his back while they were walking to some house party, there was a wriggling sour feeling along with the excitement.

“Mmhmm.” He massaged the roots in figure eights, so fond he was nauseous. I love you so much I could blow up my own house. “You should go for a natural black dye instead of blue-black. It looks way less fake.” Your house, too.
