He knows of boys disappearing off the face of the earth, after being suspected or discovered or blamed - boys who were thrashed and ostracized and sent away to start fresh. Hidden pasts and shameful secrets. He never knew them well, but he knowsof them. One at his last school. A few mentioned by Jeff, disgraced alumni and so on… The ‘brothers’ who lived in the house by Cherry Street and 4th, and who sometimes got rocks thrown through their windows. People talk. Todd listens.

Summary
Todd Anderson could not sleep. It wasn't for lack of trying, he'd been tossing and turning for nearly two hours now. The problem was that it was too cold in his dorm, and he couldn't stay warm underneath the thin, school-issued blanket he had.
The school's heating system had crapped out during the day. Not great when it was January in Vermont. The system had always been faulty, Todd learned from the other poets, but it'd never actually broken before. Everyone had been coping with the change well, except for Todd.

The heat is broken and Todd can't sleep, so Neil suggests they huddle for warmth.
