The double-entendre of it had stuck in Will like a blade: there is no opportunity in life that Hannibal and all his resources cannot afford him, and there is no person whose life Hannibal will not grant him the ability to take.

It’s the year Will will celebrate his forty-ninth birthday, and Hannibal will celebrate his fifty-eighth, and it’s the end of the world and it’s not even their doing. It’s not even a surprise, really. It’s not like there weren’t signs- like it wasn’t clear, as everything became more unstable and less civilized, what the end result would be.

The physicality of it is secondary to how it rattles him internally, makes him feel wound up and unstrung all at once. He doesn’t know how he’ll catch his breath, how he’ll ever breathe again. He doesn’t black out, and he doesn’t quite fall asleep, but he does feel not all there. The closest thing he can compare it to is the quiet drugged up peace he would awaken to when they were in their recovery right after the fall- before the pain set in and all Will knew was that he was alive, and that he was with Hannibal, and nothing else mattered at all.

Will glanced up to see Hannibal giving him an unimpressed look, and he sighed as he put his book down, though he couldn't help from smiling. "I'm kidding. Where do you want to go?"

It felt as if Will was experiencing a thousand moments at once- the moments familiar, but not in the way he had originally lived them. Will had been speaking mostly metaphorically when he once said he felt himself guilty of having committed Hannibal’s crimes. Feeling this kaleidoscope of experience, wherein he was the observer, the victim, and the perpetrator all at once, he believed for a moment that he actually had.

In which Hannibal dies in the fall, leaving Will alone to try to figure out what comes next. In another universe, Will dies, and Hannibal is left to wonder the same.
