Summary
A new show opens at Milleflora Opera House, but each night someone in the audience falls asleep during the performance, dreams unusually realistic dreams, and dies by morning, leaving distraught ghosts behind. It should be a straightforward case....right up until it isn't.
Edwin does not like coincidences—he believes the world simultaneously too random and too orderly—but he accepts that they do, on occasion, happen. But this morning brought a third ghost to their door in as many days, this time only minutes after the sun has even risen. A third ghost to have slept and dreamt and died before sunrise at the very same opera, well.
That is most emphatically not a coincidence.
Charles nods his agreement. “So we’re taking them all on, then. One big case.”
“Indeed.”

Summary
It was a shit case, even though they’re all back in the office safe and mostly sound. But Crystal’s exhausted, which makes her meaner than she intends to be, and Edwin’s having a not exactly quiet freak out and pacing circles around the office. Which leaves Charles holding it all together, when all he really wants to do right now is break something. A specific something he should’ve remembered long before today.
*****
“One of those ghosts is back at the witch’s’ house.”
The Cat King lazily opens one eye with his best pretense of disinterest. “Oh? And which ghost is it?”
Marmalade sniffs derisively. “I don’t know, the rude one.”
“That doesn’t narrow it down,” the Cat King mutters. But he doubts it’s Edwin. Which leaves the Cat King wondering what Rowland is doing in Port Townsend.
Ugh, he’s going to have to go find out. Fuck only knows what one of those Dead Boy Detectives will get up to if left unsupervised, especially without the other one there to haul on the reins. Just look at the last time.Charles and the Cat King commit some crimes, clear the air, and maybe even end up (reluctantly) something like friends.

Summary
He always forgets, in the years between returns.
Maybe if he was burning through his lives more than once a century or so, he’d remember, but he’s honestly done pretty good for himself on that front. Hard to really regret not fucking up hard enough to lose a life on the regular.
But three lives stretch out behind him, number four lays spread before him, and he’s forgotten again in between.
Thomas feels as though he is overflowing with joy—at which point he immediately shatters it all.
The joy bubbles up, champagne and butterflies, and turns to a hum and then he purrs for the first time in years—
—and it’s changed, it’s different, it’s wrong—
—he always fucking forgets. The Cat King's purr sounds different with each new life, and he's having An Emotion about it. Luckily Edwin is there to offer some comfort.

Summary
It’s not that Charles minds helping Edwin research. The opposite, really. He’s not a studier the way Edwin is but it’s been absolutely aces learning all sorts of stuff about magic and the supernatural over the years of his afterlife. The universe is so much bigger and stranger that he ever knew or could have guessed. Plus, when whatever Edwin’s looking for isn’t urgent, it’s a really nice way to spend a quiet afternoon together. One of his favourite ways, if he’s being honest.
Then Charles’ mouth works faster than his brain, as usual, and he asks, “You ever seen one? An angel, I mean,” before immediately chastising himself. -

Summary
Edwin tells himself he is content with running his bookshop in solitude, and ignores how that solitude has been shading ever further into loneliness. It’s his own fault he’s alone, after all. But as winter deepens and the holiday season approaches, he saves an injured cat and brings it home out of the cold...
When Edwin was younger, he was often alone but seldom lonely, despite having no friends save those in his beloved books. But the books never chided or teased him, and always invited him into their world, and in many ways he never felt the lack of company from others his age.
What a difference a few years of a having a friend made.
But that thought is the first step down a road Edwin refuses to think about. He locks away the ache and concentrates on keeping his footing on snow-slick concrete, instead.

Summary
Their last case had been intense. A house full of screaming ghost children who’d been trafficked and killed in the basement. The ghost of their murderer haunted the building too, the children abused even after their deaths. Charles would admit that he completely demolished the trafficker, assault so vicious hell would take notes. He felt nothing but grim satisfaction when the demonic red glow came for the man.

Summary
"Do you think I'm fit?"
The question nearly makes Edwin drop the very important artifact he had been cautiously transporting back into its proper place on the shelf, and he is, not for the first time, appreciative of the way his ghostly form does not allow such an indignity as a blush.
"What on earth has possessed you to ask me such a question, Charles? Especially when I am busy?"
Charles, at least, looks mildly sheepish.
"Well, it's just, I've been thinkin’ about it, haven't I?”
“Oh, have you?” Edwin says dryly.

Summary
Edwin keeps goin’ translucent enough Charles can see the windowsill straight through his throat, before he shudders and takes a breath and—forces himself, it looks like, right back whole again.
“C’mon, mate,” Charles says. “Whatever that is can wait ‘til later, yeah?”
