“I refuse to play into your delusions,” Octavius snapped, trying to dislodge Jedediah, “Rome will conquer as she always has.”
“Yeah, alright,” Jedediah said, voice dripping with condescension. He leaned forward, almost plastered to Octavius' back. He pushed down on Octavius' neck, shoving him harder into the museum's marble flooring, “We ain't gonna lose to a bunch’a stupid skirts. Y'all're gonna hafta work a lot harder to get one over on ol’ Jedediah.”

Summary
As casually as he could, he shifted his hand where it was still held tightly in Rooster’s grip, inching his fingers forwards until they brushed against the exposed part of his wrist. Jake gently pressed the tips of his fingers down, searching with light movements until he found what he was looking for.
And there it was.
The soft beat of Rooster’s pulse thumped against the pads of his fingers, as slow and steady as the man approached every aspect of life. Jake felt the panic recede at once, the irrefutable proof that he had done it, he had saved Rooster, seeming to be enough for his brain to calm down.

“They’re lucky no adults were around,” Dennis says without thinking. “When I was a kid, if I got caught doing something like that, my dad would make me go to the woods and find a switch.”
There’s a tiny pause before Trinity says, “Wait, what?” Her voice isn’t teasing anymore.
“What do you mean?” Dennis asks, genuinely puzzled.
“What do I mean? You just said your father whipped you.”
“Well, not really-,”
“No, you literally just implied he used to make you go outside, find a branch, and then hit you with it.”
“Well… yeah. But it’s not like he was abusing me or anything. He loved me.”
OR: During movie night with the girls, Dennis lets something slip about his childhood. The girls react.
