She can still make out their face, so close to hers. Their mouth hangs open, inhaling water and exhaling bubbles.
*(Are you screaming?)
Kris doubles over, and for a moment Noelle thinks that she has her answer. They're going to die together, like they always thought they would as kids. Only instead of fighting cool enemies or dire circumstances they had become the creatures to be stabbed with sword.
Something inside of them pulses, so powerfully Noelle feels it through her hooves. Their body rattles around like a bag of chips under assault- and then, with a great shove, something comes out of their chest. Noelle is reminded of parasitic worms escaping a host as it wiggles through their sodden shirt. Kris had loved showing her those videos as a fawn, delighted by her disgust.
Then it's in front of her.
And it's glowing.

Summary
"We were so worried, we heard you—" Ragatha starts, and then looks up. She meets Jax's gaze dead-on, and goes silent. Tears brim in the corner of her eye. Her hand flies up to cover her mouth. He can't tell if the look on her face is relief or fear.
Gangle's staring at him like she's seen a ghost. Pomni slowly raises to her feet, brows furrowed. She winces as every movement jars her wavering form.
Cowered on the floor, panting, confused and disoriented, with everyone standing above him, taller than him… it reminds Jax of something deeply unpleasant. They're all staring at him. They're all seeing him.
Jax knows they're not going to like what they see.
His breath quickens until his head is spinning, and he feels like he's going to vomit. He forces himself upwards with a frustrated cry, swaying in place, and then turns and bolts towards his room as fast as he can.
"NO!" Pomni screams.
(or: pomni pulls jax back from the brink.)

"Jax?"
Turning to look at the small crowd that had gathered behind him Jax rolled his eyes. "Who Pomni? She's fine, Never been better."
His sarcastic and cutting tone made Zooble roll her eyes while Gangle flinched slightly but it was Ragatha who spoke up first. "You don't need-"
He cut her off, not really in the mood to be chastised by her or any of them at the moment. "Seriously though guys, what; this isnt like the birds and bees talk. You can't just avoid talking about it for 20 years and then throw your hands up and go 'Oopse, I guess we missed our chance, sorry' when she finally does start asking questions."
A small smirk of satisfaction spread across his face as everyone shifted uncomfortably, looking slightly ashamed. Again it was Ragatha who spoke for the group. "We... we didn't know... how to... tell her."
That made the smirk fall from his face. "You tell her the truth, that her physical body in the real world is dying and that soon she'll be stuck here forever as a digital copy of her former self."
