Eridian Grace was raised on earth and packed away to go on the Hail Mary expenditure, with very little knowledge on how to be a proper astronaut. When Rocky meets him, he’s confused as to how there’s another life form that looks like him, he then learns the truth, and he’s pissed

A Rocky POV of Project Hail Mary, but add in a sprinkle of originally named astrophages, petrova lines, language barriers, trauma recovery, and extra, extra worldbuilding. Includes pre- and post-canon!

One day, his strumming was not answered.

The silence that answered his one verse of song was horrible and grating. Incomplete. Empty. A sick, horrible fear built up inside him.

(He was going to die out here. Alone.)

"Iz huhg," Grace sniffled out, sucking back in moisture from his noze, too. There was moisture and water and everything all over the place. "Huhg meens grayt, grayt, grayt affekshun."

"Oh," he said tentatively. Another hewmin thing! He shuffled closest to the wall Grace was huhging and leaned in. "Oh. Am I doing correctly, hmm?"

"Yis," Grace sighed out, calming down. He still leaked, though.

Oh, well. Leaky hewmins were his favorite, after all.

“Don’t let the blood get into your ship, okay?”

    That made Grace pause. “What?!”

“If I die, you have to get my body out of here,” the man pleaded, but Grace had to go. His oxygen was out. The guy would be dead in six minutes. “You have to get me out, even if I’m dead. Hey!”

“Just hold on!” Grace propelled himself through zero gravity, away from the radio.

“Don’t leave me here-!” The roar echoed through the ship halls.

When Ryland Grace complained about being a little bored, maybe a little lonely, he thought a nostalgic trip around Erid would fix him right up. The last thing he expected was to find deadly space bacteria in deep space and a human. Alive.

    Summary

Popular tales in Eridian folklore include a long, lanky creature that cracks the carapaces of those who enter the ocean.
So when Erid’s saviour returns in a small, foreign spaceship, missing 23 crewmates, and presenting a creature with an uncanny resemblance to their cautionary tales, Erid is, understandably, horrified.

Yet at some point, somehow, the creature had found its way into the hearts of Eridians, and the grotesque alien from the unknown of space became a beloved teacher of their most vulnerable.

Or: Erid learns to love Grace.
