    Summary

Mydei does the math in his head. It’s July right now, therefore… Phainon should only be three months older than him. He scoffs. “Don’t get too cocky. Three months is hardly a difference.”

“I wasn’t trying to be cocky!” Phainon insists. Despite Mydei’s cold words, Phainon seems too happy. “So you’re an October baby, huh? Were you born on Halloween?”

For a moment, Mydei wonders why his friends and Cyrene left him with this guy again. Then he feels a sharp pain in his head, and the memory of Phainon catching him before he faceplanted onto the ground resurfaces. He resigns himself to his fate.

Mydei goes to Aedes Elysiae for the summer. He doesn't expect to meet the love of his life there.

    Summary

Phainon is twenty-nine years old, possessing a degree that does nothing but sit in display, and working odd jobs. Oh, and also close to losing his home thanks to Aedes Elysiae’s delightful housing costs.

An opportunity comes in the form of a Jadeslist posting made by concerned parents seeking a ‘date’ for their son, Mydeimos, who has been suffering the curse of being single for all twenty-one years of his life. The pay? Nymphbook Air and twenty-five thousand Balance Coins.

Phainon might just be the person for the job.

(or: one sweltering summer, two people who are absolutely not in love, and a play in three acts.)

    Summary

The next time Mydei sees Phainon, there's a heap of soil on the floor.

The order of events, specifically, is this: Mydei had walked into the flower shop, and a pot had slipped from gloved hands, ultimately cracking against wooden tiles. It had been, and still is, paired with the ocean blues of mortification, looking at her as though Mydei had personally knocked it over herself.

A white-haired florist catches Mydei’s attention across the street from the tattoo parlor.

"Chiron only trains heroes." He repeats the same words from that day. "It’s not something you choose.”

    "And you are one?"

The question stung. Mydeimos’ jaw tightened. "It was foretold."

“Right. Foretold,” Phainon scoffed, as if it were a minor detail. “Well, no one’s foretold anything about me, so I guess I have to make my own way.”

One trained by fate, the other chasing it. The gods, of course, remain entertained.
Chiron watches them both, and wonders how many ways a heart could break.

Or; Ancient Greece—Mydeimos and Phainon grow up together in the forest, undergoing a decade of training to become heroes.

    Summary

"Do you have work for me, or are you simply gawking like the rest?"

Work. Monsters to be vanquished or demons to fight. One doesn't hire a witcher unless they're desperate.

Phainon shivers. "Not work," he says, watching the witcher blink, breathe, study him. From his mannerisms alone, he reminds Phainon of a half-tamed animal. Alert, keenly aware of everything. They say witchers can smell fear. What, then, does he smell on Phainon? "But I have another request."

    "Speak, then."

He inhales, swipes his tongue over his lips to taste the rainwater on them. "When you set off," Phainon says, "take me with you."

Mydei just wants to fight monsters, collect his paycheck, and move on to the next miserable village and the next miserable client with something to slay. Phainon would do anything it takes to grow stronger and escape his past, even follow a witcher around. Neither of them was ever meant to fall in love.
