Summary
After returning to Xing, Ling claims the throne as rightfully his, and begins working at undoing the impossible knots and stuffy walls of tradition, and encouraging those in Xing to find common ground—whether it be between class, race, sex, or otherwise. Certainly the Emperor and his Shadow must be an example of this.
As Lan Fan is caught in the midst of politics and court affairs, falling right into the hands (and heart) of the Emperor of Xing himself, she must choose between duty, desire, and what most certainly feels like damnation, amongst the rising threat of forces that wish to annihilate the Emperor and his will.
There is a fine line between want and need, and surely they must both understand that what they both want and need is not always what they are allowed to have—though who is Lan Fan to deny what her master requires? Perhaps the homunculus Greed still exists somewhere inside Ling Yao, and Lan Fan simply has to coax it forward—and deal with it accordingly. Or, maybe, Ling Yao is simply what Mei Chang says he is: just too greedy.

As his party travels to return to Xing, before he can become the proper Emperor of his country, Ling Yao has to deal with a lot – blistering desert treks, nightmares of moving shadows and sharp magenta eyes, midnight brawls against moonlit punching bags, rewriting his country’s classist laws, constant headaches, getting kidnapped, voices in his head – or, perhaps, it’s only one voice.
In any case, ever since Ling left Amestris, there’s been something wrong with him, and it’s only a matter of time before the truth appears, undoubtedly unceremoniously, and drags his slowly-rebuilding world back into the past.

They check the village twice for signs of remaining life, or un-life, because as skilled as the two of them might be at reading chi, the damned read as cold and dead as stone. If anything their presence triggers an absence of the Pulse, as if their frames actively repel the energy of the universe. But one hears sound over silence and light over darkness.
Absence, by definition, refuses to be defined.
Digging her automail blade into the wooden door of the storehouse, Lan Fan slices through. A few decaying corpses pile near the door, blackened hands curled inwards like withered trees in the dead of winter. She kicks at their faces and the overripe fruits of their heads collapse in on themselves. A stench she would liken to rotten soft cheese drifts upwards. Pausing for another second to confirm a lack of movement, Lan Fan drags the corpses outside and adds them to the bonfire in the village centre. After a few moments she feels Ling’s presence in the stream of chi. “We’re clear,” he says. “The rest of the village is dead. Dead dead. Deader than dead.”
