Summary
Luca turns his gaze to Shu. Like the rest of them, his hair is matted, colors faded from his highlights. The fire illuminates the dirt and blood that’s smeared across his cheeks, his neck. And when he breathes, chest rising and falling, the line of his collarbones are sharp, too sharp. But in the light, his eyes shine a bright purple—still vivid, still beautiful. Still full of life.
“Maybe you’re immune.” Luca’s voice is light with hope. “I mean, you’re not showing any symptoms. Maybe you—”
“It’s only been a few hours,” Shu cuts in gently. “And you’re the one with eight-leaf clover luck, not me.”
Luca tries to smile, but it falters. That so-called luck has always felt like a cruel joke, letting him stumble through life untouched while others bled for it. What was the point of surviving, if it meant losing the one person who made survival feel like something more than endurance?

Shu was not expecting her to lean fully into him, almost making him lose balance. His eyes widen as he firms his footing, hands hovering near her hips.
⎾ Stay over the night? ⏌ She asks, a little mumbled-slurred together as her face presses to the crook of his neck.
It's sudden. It threatens to turn his brain upside down. Thankfully, he's part bat.
⎾ I can... ⏌ His hand starts to rise near the back of her head, itching to run claw-nails through her blue-fair hair, but he thinks better of it; places it at her arm to start helping her inside. ⎾ ... think about it. ⏌

Shu has never been good with confrontation. Unlike his best friend, Uki, he'd rather stay quiet and fade into the background while someone else took the reins. So when Uki started dating Luca, the new student everyone seemed drawn to, Shu didn't mind being invisible.
But after the relationship ends, Luca's unwavering gaze becomes something Shu can't pretend not to notice anymore. And then Uki drops the kind of bomb only he could deliver: "Isn't it crazy?" Uki sighs, exasperated. "He kept telling me you were the reason we broke up. Like I can't make decisions for myself."
Shu only nods, pretending to listen, his mind stuck on one fact: Luca thinks he ruined everything.
He tries to ignore the sharp glares Luca keeps sending his way. But it's nearly impossible.
