    Summary

Strong were the lungs of Maegor, and tireless. Within the first sennight of his life, he had established a tyranny over the Red Keep; servants crept about corridors with anxious eyes and noble ladies who had once begged for a glimpse of the prince now contrived polite excuses to shorten their visits. The babe wailed at the light, at the dark, at hunger, at fullness, at swaddling and at freedom alike.

He had survived his birth. Aerion, in truth, had scarcely done so.

Sleepless and recovering from his labors, Aerion tends to the fussiest babe of the realm and tries not to think of a certain knight’s absence.

“Bring him,” Aerion commanded again, his words breaking at their edges. “Bring him now.

The maester hesitated for the span of a fractured heartbeat, for Ser Duncan was in the city, far beyond the castle walls. Aerion saw it, and his eyes flared near incandescently.

“If you dare remain idle whilst I bleed upon this accursed bed I swear by all that yet remains of my line that I shall have your heads when this is done.”

Aerion gives birth to his first child with the Captain of the Gold Cloaks. It is not an easy endeavor.

    Summary

“So, according to your account… nothing out of the ordinary happened in that cabin?” He turned his gaze back to the knight, an irritated grunt escaping his throat when the prince tried to pull the dagger back.

    “N-No…”

The two counselors exchanged quick glances and stood, making their way out of the room. Duncan shifted slightly as they left, as if something were about to ignite right there.

Maekar rose to his feet, the scrape of his chair ringing sharply in the knight’s ears.

“Curious. Truly very curious, Ser Duncan,” he growled, his tone edged with aggression. “Because today, just before sunrise, Maesters came knocking at my door with news that this man—” he pointed at Aerion, who raised his thin brows, “my second son, is carrying a child at this very moment.”

Duncan felt a sharp pain behind his eyes. Perhaps it was because he had never opened them as wide as he did when he heard it.

(OR, Duncan is forced to choose between duty and desire in a world that would destroy them both)

    Summary

“Duncan.” Aerion said firmly. His face tightened for a moment before relaxing completely, large lilac eyes looking at him pleadingly. “I am still cold. Stay with me.”

Duncan froze, his feet seeming to have been nailed to the wooden floor. His breath faltered, his heart pounding hard. Blue eyes fixed on the pale violet ones, a silent argument passing between them, a tug-of-war to see who would give in first.

    “Come sleep.”

Aerion said it, the invitation sounding far too dangerous, yet Duncan found himself moving toward the man. His feet moved on their own.

    “Is that an order?”

“No…” Aerion whispered, his voice low and seductive like the song of a siren. “Just a request.”

(Or, after enduring the hardships of winter, Aerion and Duncan realized that sharing each other’s warmth might be the only way to survive a cruel night.)
