Summary
When Penelope wakes, blearily, she shifts to her opposite side in the uncomfortable hospital bed.
She sees him there, in the same place he has been for the last several days, from the moment she first awoke.

An accident steals five years of Penelope's memory, leaving her baffled and confused as she tries to adjust to the life that is, apparently, hers—a life she had once dreamed of, no less. Before the fights and the couples’ therapy and the slow, inevitable drift. Before the night he came home from work to find Marina on the sofa, pale and drawn, already knowing every word that was about to come out of her mouth (because the words were already on his tongue, weren’t they?). Before the thousands spent on divorce lawyers and moving into the sad flat Anthony found for him and having to tell the fucking kids (worst bit – Oliver had gotten so quiet and Amanda had cried silently; wouldn’t let either of them touch her).
He could have gotten out of it. Ben had called him and said we can find someone else in a way that made it very clear they probably couldn’t, and Colin being Colin (reliable; helpful – a dope, maybe), had said no, no, I’ll do it.
Which is how he ends up in Bari, parked in a service station in a cramped hire car; forty-five; divorced; and about to embark on a two-week trip across Italy he had booked in an attempt to save his marriage. Without, you know, his wife.

All three screens have the same image. Not image, really — it's a video. Penelope lets out a squeal and covers her eyes but it is too late. She has already seen it, the picture burned into her eyes in triplicate.
It is an anime. Or — hentai, she supposes. A cartoon girl with impossibly giant tits and long, peach-coloured hair spread out naked, her legs open and her wrists pinned, and her body covered in writhing purple tentacles. Not just covering her — going inside of her. As in — one curling in and out of her dripping pussy (which is topped with a little patch of matching peach hair), stretching her obscenely. “Mr Bridgerton? Colin?”
He almost did not recognise her. She looked very different — pretty red curls bobbed fashionably; cheeks and lips stained with a little rouge; a day dress in a lovely mauve colour that made her eyes seem bluer, somehow — but it was her scent that threw him off. Now that he thought about it, he could not quite recall what Penelope Featherington actually smelled like (he had not seen her in years, after all). She was so often at Bridgerton House that all he could summon was the same lilac smell that his mother and his siblings bore, but of course there must be other notes he was forgetting.
Still, he was fairly certain she had never smelled like this: vetiver and geranium, sharp and green and floral.
Not a bad smell by any means — just not Penelope’s. Even though he could not recall her scent, he knew certainly this was not it. She must be wearing perfume. It befuddled him so much that he realised he had been staring at her silently for a lot longer than was polite, especially for an old family friend he had not seen in ages.

It is not the mask. When Penelope teases him for this later, Colin is going to make it very clear that it is no fault of the mask. It is the bloody wig she had put on in an effort to properly disguise herself from the ton. He has spent his entire adult life seeking out red hair, and now he keeps forgetting to look for blonde. It has always been red, the red haired girl across the street, the one he had fallen in love with so devotedly that it still feels like they exist in their own world every time they speak.
