There was a cardboard box sitting on her office chair when she arrived. A yellow Post-It was stuck to the top, bearing the words “help yourself” in sloppy handwriting that Carol immediately recognized. She knew what she would find inside, but she opened the box anyway. Carol finds it in the third week of living alone with an unhived Zosia: a New York Times article, “To Fall In Love With Anyone, Do This.” An intimacy experiment involving thirty-six increasingly personal questions and, at the end of it, four uninterrupted minutes of eye contact, which sounds fake and humiliating and somehow still not bad enough to stop her.
