Viktor doesn’t blame them. He understands the seduction, for he is susceptible to it himself. The flesh is weak, and the distraction is persuasive, particularly when it is made this criminally personable. Brilliance, made marketable. Ambition, made photogenic. It’s very easy to let the structural violence become set dressing when the foreground is this compelling. Viktor has done it himself. Repeatedly. Reverently, even.
Which is how Jayce Talis comes into focus, Piltover’s darling sleight of hand—lavishly funded, warmly received and impossible to look away from.

Summary
It’s grotesque, this flavor of envy – not just of the man himself, but of his accident of proximity, his animal privilege to be the one within Viktor’s reach, provisional laurels crowning him man of the hour. That nameless fucker got to choke on Viktor’s praise, got to gorge on his unraveling in ways that Jayce only caught secondhand, while he rotted on the opposite side of the hallway, working his own mouth around those stolen syllables like a deranged ventriloquist. La chair est faible – flesh bartering what it cannot keep. Jayce’s proved weakest in the humiliating ways jealousy prefers: twitching, salivating, writhing in sheets that smelled of no one but himself.

It should not matter. They’re not even a year in. They don’t share an apartment. They’ve barely begun. But sometimes, when Jayce is in the bath and reading aloud with no awareness of his volume, Viktor forget’s that they don’t. The line between yours and mine is already smudged beyond recovery. They share lab keys and research grants and too many nights that blur into dawn. Doctoral candidates with matching lanyards and no time for office hours. Jayce teaches part of a seminar he half-prepares in Viktor's bed. Viktor models quantum diffusion systems at 3 a.m with Jayce’s hand buried in his hair, breath warm at his nape.
They orbit each other like binaries – two distinct bodies locked in shared momentum, gravity-born and holy in their tether. And still, it’s not enough.
Because skin is finite. Desire, however, obeys no such law.

“Worse than last time?” Jayce posits a guess.
“It’s, eh-” Viktor shrugs. Tilts his chin this way and that. A tsk. “Bearable. I’ve endured worse hangovers in college.” he was going for a laugh, but the punchline never truly lands. Instead, Jayce’s thumb rubs softly into the back of his palm, pressing like he wants to idle the muscle mass into something new. It’s such a small thing, whatever this is, and yet it steadies the flow of his blood; the relief of loosening a valve, flicking off a pressure switch. It’s the necessary cracking-open of his breast. Jayce squeezes. Viktor allows himself the luxury of a sigh. “You shouldn’t be here.” he mutters.
Jayce reflexively shakes his head. “I took the day off.”
“We both know that’s-”
“—I could take the week.” he insists, almost a threat, a flicker of that eternal stubbornness coursing through him.

Viktor longs for a soft place in which to bury his teeth.

Summary
Jayce Talis was striking the first time Viktor laid eyes on him — a jagged edge.
It was foolish to hope that the inkling of a premature crush, which Viktor had no sense in developing or nurturing to fruition, would soon crash and burn until even the cinders had overturned in the cold, unforgiving earth.
But Jayce Talis prevailed, becoming an indivisible specimen that billowed between radiance and essence.
