Summary
Edwin tells Charles he loves him in Hell, but when Charles quickly responds with his own breathless 'I love you', Edwin assumes his friend meant it platonically, so he gives up halfway through his confession, leaving out the crucial 'I'm in love with you' part. Dejected, he decides to keep his feelings a secret.
Meanwhile, Charles has been in love with his best mate for years, so when they unexpectedly exchange 'I love yous' on the staircase of Hell, Charles happily assumes that they've just started dating and are just going at a really slow pace.
Needless to say, they're not really on the same page.

Summary
Charles isn’t a stranger to having brilliant ideas, he has them quite often if you ask him, maybe slightly less often if you ask Crystal, but Edwin would probably agree with him.
However this one might just be his best one yet.
“I’ve given your confession some real thought, yeah? So… how about we give trying to date a go?” asks Charles.
After a few beats too long, Edwin is finally able to speak.
“Thank you, Charles, but that won’t be necessary,” answers Edwin tightly and doesn’t offer anything else.

OR: In order to figure out his feelings Charles asks Edwin to date him, but is promptly refused. When an unexpected turn of events during a case leaves Edwin injured, Charles’ struggles with his feelings have to be put on the back burner. Unless he can somehow multitask…

Summary
“Gay?” Edwin tilted his head to the side. In his experience, homosexuality was far from gay. The chanting of Mary Ann had been the macabre lullaby that his killers had sung him to death with; Edwin had undergone decades of torture, he suspected, as a direct result of his suspected inclinations. No, there was no joy in being a homosexual, in Edwin’s opinion. Charles was simply using odd language again.
“Yeah. It means, like… you know. When two blokes fancy each other, they’re gay.”
“Oh.” Edwin pivoted to face Charles. “So, gay is something of a synonym for homosexual, then?”
“Yeah.” Charles grinned. “Yeah, it is.”
“An odd linguistic choice, I must say. Back in my day, gay meant that someone was quite happy.”
“Well, those chaps look happy, don’t they? So, I don’t know. Maybe it isn’t too far off the mark.”
