"Macklin looks back as he says it, a small love you pressed into his brother’s shaggy, overgrown hair. His green eyes are filled with mirth, twinkling and breathtakingly beautiful.
Will clambers over after a moment of watching from the sidelines, engulfing the two Celebrini’s in a hug, leaning all of his weight against them. RJ screeches his disapproval before dissolving into laughter. Macklin just giggles, bright and airy, and tightens his grip on RJ to keep him in place under the weight of Will’s affection.
Will squeezes his arms tight, pressing a smile to the back of Macklin’s neck."
The off-season after the kiss, where Will is allergic to communication, Mack is learning to be someone other than his brother’s guardian, and RJ is the real main character.

“He just wants so badly for RJ to be okay. That’s it. Because if RJ’s okay then that means that Macklin’s done his job. Absorbed all of his brother’s grief and sadness like a sponge until he has it all and RJ carries none of it.
But life isn’t that simple, and grief doesn’t work like that. If you’re not careful, the blackness of it sticks to your bones, fills the cracks in your heart until you’re half human and half something else. A monstrous thing. There’s no way to absorb someone else’s sadness, not entirely. It just keeps coming, unending and all-consuming.
You have to let them feel it.”

“Hey you remember our bets?”
Will laughed. “Yes of course I do. They were always incredibly stupid and I only did them to get a rise out of you.”
Mack smiled. “Well … I got one more for you.”
“Oh? And that is?”
“If we win the cup,” at this Will’s eyebrows raised. Mack kept eye contact staring into his blue eyes, full of want and curiosity. “We kiss. Right there, in front of everyone.”
“You’re insane! You know that, right?” a laugh escaped Will’s lips as he said this.
In a sing-song voice Mack said, “But you love me.”
“I do. I really, really do.” He smiled, head coming closer to Mack’s.
“…So?”
Will leaned forward farther until their foreheads touched, smiling into his lips. “Not if, but when we win the cup, I’ll kiss you so hard and make sure every camera in the building can see it.”
