Summary
“Satoru?” The word rings, fuzzy in his ears as it whines like tinnitus, familiar and heart stopping.
‘I’m dead.’ He can’t even hear his own thoughts over the loudness of the world, staggering where he stands, eyes still fixated on the sky, on the sun. ‘I’m dead, I died, I felt my heart stop, this can’t be, it can’t-’
“Hey,” it comes again, a little more urgent than before, a little closer, another hammer to his ears and all the noise shrieking behind his eyes. He recoils hard enough to go stumbling as a hand reaches for him, covered in flesh rather than empty bone, tan and recognizable. Unbelievable.
There’s something wet trickling from his nose. Bile stings on the back of his tongue. The words dissolve into the rest of the white noise as he stares up at the blue of the sky, and tries to remember if he’d ever had a hallucination as bright as this.
‘I have to be dead,’ he thinks. Somehow, he isn’t.
Or: Gojo Satoru goes back in time. He makes a couple of changes for the better.

“Hello, is this Megumi Fushiguro?”
It’s a man’s voice.
“Yes,” Megumi says. “Who is this?”
“Ah, forgive the multiple calls, but I have some very important business to discuss with you. I’m Kenji Tajiro, Satoru Gojo’s lawyer.”
A week later Megumi is sitting in a clinically white and sleekly modern office building in the heart of Tokyo. Jennifer is at his feet, alert, her leash held loosely in Megumi’s grasp. Yuji is sitting on his right, leg bouncing and clad in his “nicest pair of joggers”. He has Megumi’s other hand nearly crushed in his grip. The dog is alert, Yuji is a ball of nerves.
Megumi feels nothing.

Told me you’d wilt if you didn’ get enough hugs or some shit.” She points the same finger that’s been poking Infinity at Satoru in accusation. “You’re wilting. You droopy bastard.”
Satoru laughs, “You’re making me sound pathetic, and Suguru told you about all of that? I am deeply betrayed.”
Blinking at him, Shoko frowns, “He already deeply betrayed you, that's the whole.” she pauses as she sways a little on her feet, “That’s the problem.”
“Christ,” Satoru says quietly. “You need to sit down or something. Drink water.”
“When was the last time you drank water!”
Satoru takes her by the elbow and leads her down the stairs. Which is probably a good thing, she might have fallen on her face if she attempted to walk back down them by herself.
“I’m not a house plant,” Satoru says.

No, a group of ten easily distractible younglings could not do that. But Megumi could. He could hear everything in the room. The shifting of robes and the humming of the kyber crystals in Master Utahime’s lightsabers. It was annoying that the other kids were jostling, muttering and giggling. The sun was warm on the floor, deep in the core of the temple he could feel his papa and he reached, slipped into meditation he brushed against his papa’s brightness in the Force.
Satoru’s shields slammed down with a severity that burned Megumi.

He knows it is him on some infinitesimal level, the same knowledge he imagines lets a limb know to grow back into a body when it’s reattached. It can’t be anyone else. Except it also isn’t him at all.

The situation itself isn’t bad, though. Gojo clearly has control and Yuuji’s just here to learn, so he’ll save questions for the end. It’s not like Gojo’ll answer them now anyway. Yuuji respects him and thinks he’s super cool, for sure. Explaining past the obvious or like, at all, is just clearly not one of his strengths. So, right, okay. They’re in Gojo’s domain. Yuuji’s hanging onto Gojo, Gojo’s carrying him under one arm, his other hand firm on the top geyser part of Mt. Fuji’s head (yanking on it, gross), and while it's all happening, Fuji screams, “Fucking Geto—“
The world shatters. Yuuji muffles a shriek into Gojo’s shirt. The sounds of the forest and the lake they’re on flood back in like a door’s been bust through. After a long enough pause, Yuuji peeks out.

Satoru doesn’t give a shit if he could kill every curse in the whole country with a flick of his fingers: if Suguru’s not at his side to watch it happen, he couldn't care less about doing it. That’s just the kind of surety you have when you’re an arrogant, all powerful teenager and the person you love most in the world happens to be the same.
It’s selfish. It’s the truth. A truth he’s had to come to terms with more than ever considering just how close death’s circled them in the past year. So the fact he feels like he’s right on the edge of— he doesn’t even know, something bad, something that could take Suguru from him—
He’s kicking the sheets off before the thought’s even fully formed.

"Unfortunately, our progress has stalled out somewhat," Ikithon says, slowly circling the beacon on its stand. Under any other circumstances, that would be the thing that drew Essek's eye.
Instead, his gaze is fixed on the man sitting in a chair at the circle's center. A picture of misery, he is bound hand and foot to the chair with thick iron cuffs. His face is mottled with bruising, his rust colored hair hangs in limp, tangled clumps, and his clothes are torn and burnt. Wide, frightened eyes the color of daylight sky whip frantically back and forth between them.
Essek knows that face. He knows it all too well. Not two months ago, that face kissed him on the forehead and told him that he was still capable of good.
The bottom drops out of Essek's stomach. Please not him.
