Summary
He knows from the moment he sees Joel helping the girl down from the horse she’s on that something’s up. There’s an ease to the movement that says he almost certainly helped her up on the horse as well, and the way she moves with absolute trust that he won’t let her fall says there’s a bond there that’s had time to develop.
The girl sticks close to Joel’s side, eyes wary, as he guides her back over.
“This is Ellie,” Joel says before turning to her. “This is my brother, T-”
“Tommy, yeah. I heard. Not all of us have shit ears, grandpa.”
He blinks at the comment, but Joel doesn’t seem offended, even as he rolls his eyes.
This is his second hint.

They’d been living in Jackson for three months when Joel hesitantly pitched the idea to her.
For the past three months, they’d been recovering from their journey to the Fireflies. After medical procedures, arguments, and many near-death experiences, they’d decided to settle down in Jackson and have a normal life, the kind of life Ellie hadn’t gotten a chance to have yet. A life where she could easily be a kid without having to worry about the infected or defending herself or keeping watch at night or saving the world.
This led to his idea—school tended to be considered “normal.” Why not have her take it?

Strictly speaking, he’s not wrong. Ellie is angry - has been since she said goodbye to Riley’s lifeless body - and ever since Silver Lake, it’s been pressing down on her chest and leaving no room for her lungs to expand.
But she’s not going to yell at him for it. She won’t- she won’t do it. Not when she’s already so completely fucked up and so, so close to driving him away. If she yells at him, and if he walks away, then she’s gone. Without Joel to protect her, without Jackson to call home, without someone next to her and somewhere to go, she’s fucked.
So she does the one thing she’s never been good enough to do. She keeps her fucking mouth shut. Because she’d rather let all this anger and sadness ruin her than let Joel see it. She’d rather drown in it, let it swallow her whole, than lose him for it. It fucking hurts, but it’s better than watching him give up on her.
