    Yuuta’s not really sure when it started.

    One day, suddenly he found himself hyperfocusing on Toge’s long eyelashes, the softness of his hair, and the gentle curve of his smile. He found himself flushing with heat whenever they touched each other— and unfortunately, (or maybe fortunately?) Toge always seemed to be touching him, whether it was to tease him with his silly pranks or pat him reassuringly on his shoulder. As the days went on, the warm feeling he got whenever he spent time with Toge kept growing inside of him, and soon enough, Yuuta couldn’t deny it any longer.

    He’s completely in love with his best friend.

    (or: five times Yuuta almost kisses Toge, and the one time he actually does.)

    Maki raised a brow. “Do it. Maybe he’ll carry you to the nurse’s office and you’ll touch foreheads or something.”
    Yuuta snorted.
    Then paused.
    Then… squinted.
    A spark of something unholy flickered behind his eyes.
    “Wait,” he whispered. “That’s not… a terrible idea…”
    Maki froze. “Yuuta.”
    Nobara looked alarmed. “Yuuta, no.”
    Yuuta smiled. “Yuuta, yes.”

    Maki's completely mistaken. There’s nothing overly possessive in how Yuuta treats Toge. He's protective of all his friends, Maki included. If Toge receives a little special attention, well, it’s only natural. They’re third year students now—they pretty much only fight the highest level curses—which means Toge’s throat weathers a lot more backlash. If Yuuta’s always quick to heal him afterwards, it’s only because it hurts Yuuta to see him in pain.

    Yeah, that's all.

    He's totally normal about this.

    Toge turns, expecting to find the same person from his first year, only to freeze again, this time for a completely different reason. His heart lunges in his chest, and his palms start to sweat within seconds of his eyes landing on Yuuta. He almost trips in his haste.

    There is no way. That’s not Yuuta, absolutely not.

    or, yuuta comes back from abroad looking different, and toge doesn't know how to handle it, so of course, his friends take the opportunity to tease him.

    Yuuta could feel Inumaki's breath brushing lightly against his face. Up this close, he could see every detail on the other boy's face—the faint bruise along his jaw, the pale strands of hair falling near his eyes, the dark mark of the seal where the collar had slipped down.

    “I… was worried,” he murmured softly.

    Inumaki's fingers twitched over his hand.

    Yuuta swallowed.

    “I kept thinking…” His voice faltered, quieter now. “If something happened to you, I—”

    Five times Yuuta tried to confess his feelings, and the one time he didn’t have to.
