Summary
Who he does see now is in fact John but immediately, Alexander can see that something about the image he sees is a bit off.
Well, for starters, it could be the fact that John is not standing on his balcony like a normal person, he is not sitting in a chair either. Instead, he is sitting on the not at all wide enough balcony railing, one foot dangling down, the other leg pulled close to his chest.
The second weird thing would maybe be that John is smoking and once a minute or so he takes one hand to angrily wipe at something in his face. It takes Alexander until he notices the strange shaking of his shoulders to realize that the reason for this face wiping, and likely also for the slumped posture, is that John seems to be crying.
----
Even though Alex doesn't exactly know John very well yet, when he finds John out on the railing of his balcony late at night, smoking and crying, Alex simply can't just stay inside and leave him alone.Series

Summary
The day his father came into his and Jamie's room in the middle of the night, with promises of a trip to an island close by he had been so excited. If he had told Alex that it would be permanent, he could at least have demanded of his mother why she suddenly didn’t want them anymore. He wasn’t so much of a burden as she apparently always complained to his father – but never to Alex’s own face, of course. He was a lot sometimes, fine, but he was her son. Hadn’t she loved him?

Summary
“Do you know what I am doing right now, John Laurens?”
“No?”
“Standing in front of my locked front door. Considering whether I should break into my own home or if I should just stay at yours.”
-----
Sometimes, John and Alex are too similar. Maybe, they have managed to lock themselves out in the middle of the night at the same time. -

Summary
“I thought you didn’t care about Valentine’s Day?” Alexander's voice was annoyed. Alexander’s voice was always annoyed lately, every time John spoke. Had he sounded so pissed off before or did he just not care anymore, now that Frances knew?
“I don’t,” John said. “Just came to my mind.”
And it was quiet again.
-----
Valentine's Day was about the worst topic which could be brought up between John and Alexander now, and Frances has no choice but to endure it.

Summary
John quirked an eyebrow, an edge of sarcasm in his voice. “Do all pirates have pet names for one another?”
Lafayette ignored the question, but John couldn’t help but notice the corner of his mouth twitch. Interesting. “Alexander was right, you are quite a mouthy one. What are we going to do with you, John Laurens?” Lafayette’s tongue flicked out to lick his bottom lip. John blinked, noting the suggestive tone of his voice. He felt a tingling low in his stomach, pushing away any thought of what that might mean to the back of his mind.

Summary
They stared at each other a long time, silence only interrupted by loud gushes of wind whistling in their ears. He couldn't remember the last time he had seen a kid. Actually, he didn't want to remember.
"Are you alo-" A violent hit to the back of his knees made him stumble forward and he yelped in pain and surprise. Alex had time to put his hands forward before the impact, sparing himself a broken nose. He flipped around to look at his assailant, only to find an icy shade of blue glaring down at him - a shade nearly identical to that of the girl's. But the man's eyes mattered very little, when Alex realised he was holding a gun straight to his face, finger on the trigger, ready to shoot him dead.

Summary
"Laurens found he was holding his breath as letters began to bleed through the paper. Each swirl shimmered as though an invisible hand was dipping a quill and guiding them across the page. A few more seconds and the colour had darkened to midnight black."
Fourteen months. That’s how long it’s been since Alexander Hamilton and John Laurens last met. Paroled after the fall of Charles Town, Laurens awaits in the stagnant heat of Shem Creek. Hollowed out by fever and clinging to shreds of memories, he can no longer recognise friend from foe. Yet, more terrifying than the ghosts which surround him, is the certainty that Laurens no longer knows himself.
In a world of shifting loyalties, White Writing creates a tether that refuses to let Laurens fade into the shadows, even when shadows are all he has left.
