Velma picks at the dry ground beside her. “It feels ethically dubious, to say the least.” The very least. “Isn’t it wrong to be involved with somebody who doesn’t know that I’m not the same person she started dating?”
Daphne snorts. “I think it’s probably more ethically dubious to date a girl to give you inspiration for your teen film, honestly.” Velma laughs a little. “And you’re not a different person, Velma. You’re still you, wherever you are. That’s why she likes you.”
Velma struggles to reconcile her past reality with her current one.

“Clean yourself up,” she commands.
The girl— Suletta Mercury— dutifully does as told, blowing her nose very loudly. Miorine typically doesn’t care what others think of her, much less her classmates, but right this moment, she wishes she could fall through the floor. This girl is so noisy, so full of life. Being in her presence feels like the physical manifestation of nails on a chalkboard.
Once she’s mopped up her tears, Suletta returns the pack of tissues, now only half-full, and Miorine places it back into her desk, not looking at her.
“Now leave me alone.”
Suletta’s tone is full of sadness when she replies, “Oh, Ms. Miorine. I could never do that.”

Summary
They probably overpaid for the mule. She was a little old, a little stubborn, with a sad dun colored coat that faded into the sad dun colored farm they bought her from, but Imogen was certain that a mule was the right thing for Laudna. They weren’t as skittish as horses, and while this mule was the first mule they met in their quest for an animal for Laudna to ride, Imogen assured Laudna that this mule really was perfect. (And not just because she nuzzled into Imogen’s shoulder within minutes of their introduction.)
Laudna chafes against her ideal ending, and feuds with a mule.
