Elphaba is quiet for so long that Glinda becomes convinced she didn’t actually ask that question aloud. Instead of answering, the green woman looks out over the ink-dark harbor, the sea beyond it. “We’re leaving again tomorrow.”
“Okay? And what about tonight?”

"Hmm," Elphaba rounded her desk and sat back in her chair, folding her hands under her chin to study Galinda. "Shame. I thought you were a journalist."
"I'm a reporter," Galinda corrected, though sweetly. "That's why I'm here. To get your side of the story."

Elphaba was not bothered by the constant calls from the Frottica estate to contract her. It was a stable source of income, and Oz knew they needed it. It was not an unpleasant place: the lady Arduenna had treated them kindly every time they ran her errands, not once raising her voice or questioning Elphaba’s unwillingness to take off her helmet in front of her.
“Who goes there?” Two mounted guards carrying flags with the Arduenna’s coat of arms stood proudly in their way.
Elphaba bowed her head as the guards recognized her. “May Oz guide me to serve her ladyship well.”
Or: Elphaba is an errant knight who occasionally serves Lady Galinda, the countess of Frottica. Eventually, she'll have to learn to navigate between estate matters, chivalry pacts, and her liege's longing eyes.
