This is the part he wouldn't have told anyone, because he didn't have the words for it and wouldn't have wanted them anyway: that he was happy. Right then, leaning against the counter in a kitchen that smelled like burnt coffee and the cut hay coming in through the screen door, getting needled by a girl who'd moved into his house two years ago like a hurricane and never fully moved out of his orbit since — he was happy, and — something else that he didn't fully know. Here's the thing about Clark Kent that nobody knew:

No, these were different. These were survival rules, developed over years of trial and error, designed to keep him sane in a world where he would never quite belong.Clark Kent is perfect, ridiculously good looking, and completely commitment-phobic—he has to be, so he can be the Superman everyone needs. Until he meets Lois Lane, who fucks everything up in less than 24 hours—except she doesn’t remember any of it.

Between the gruesome corpses and the quiet, unsettling doctor Cullen who shows up like a statue in pressed slacks, lying through his teeth, Charlie’s got more questions than answers—and no one seems too keen on giving him either.
Charlie’s trying not to notice how his breath catches when the doc gets too close. He’s also trying not to notice how the bodies keep piling up, unsolved. Neither effort is going particularly well.
And if one more person tells him it was a bear, he’s going to shoot something. Probably not a bear.
