Mydei hums. “With the Grove?”
Phainon feels sort-of-bad-sort-of-not for obfuscating the truth: one because it’s Mydei, and the other because the matter is about him confessing to Mydei, you see. He pulls a face. “You could say that.”
Kremnoan Roses aren't real. Probably. Phainon is about ninety-nine percent sure. But after coming across an antique Kremnoan vase, Phainon swears that if he, by some miracle, manages to recreates them, he will confess to Mydei with a bouquet of mythical roses.

Anaxa sighed in an unnecessarily put-upon way. “You’re going too easy on him, Hyacine. Treatment like this requires a firm hand. Where’s the dildo?”
In a feeble voice, Phainon said, “The what?” and was ignored.
“It’s been misplaced,” Hyacine lied cheerfully. Anaxa’s eye narrowed in suspicion. She couldn’t very well tease Phainon—not too much, anyway—but Anaxa was always fair game. “It’d be a shame to send Lord Phainon away in this condition, but I’m afraid there’s only so much I can do.”
“U-um, did you say dildo?” Phainon tried again, to no avail.

“Wanna bet on it?” he asks.
Mydei raises a brow, then, narrows his eyes.
“Bet on what?” he asks suspiciously, not unlike how one pokes a sleeping tiger.
“Bet that you can plan better dates,” Phainon says. “That you’re a better lover.”
Mydei scoffs.
“Against that male alpha? Any decent human being would win.”
Phainon pauses, an idea forming in his head. And it’s such a bad idea. Such a stupid idea. But, it could be fun. And Mydei has always indulged his stupid ideas.
“What about against me?” he asks.
(Phainon and Mydei have always been known for their competitions. It's the basis of their almost four year friendship. There's no reason they can't also compete over who's the better date either.)

Summary
The mystery comes to its conclusion before the Verax Leo in Marmoreal Market. Phainon is not, unlike some of his colleagues, in the habit of damaging the city’s statuary. But if striking with Dawnmaker will satisfy his curiosity, he is willing to risk Aglaea’s displeasure.
“My lord,” Verax Leo finally grumbles. “It concerns Kremnoan royalty.”
Phainon’s expression sharpens. “...Has something happened to Mydeimos?”
“No, Lord Phainon. Nothing like that,” The lion hesitates. “It’s... the princess.”Phainon comes to learn that Okhema is obsessed with a drag queen named "Princess of Castrum Kremnos," an extravagantly dressed performer who spends her weekends reducing audiences to laughter with a parody of the real Crown Prince. The crowd thinks it is the ultimate comedy act, happily joking that the princess and prince have never been seen in the same room.
There is no such parody. Okhema thinks it sees a brilliant satire. Phainon thinks a mysterious performer has stolen the privilege of making fun of his rival. And Mydei is just trying to make sure no one notices that the prince and the princess share the exact same biceps.
