To stroke his ego until he can’t think straight. Did Emilia tip him off? How would that conversation even go? ‘Okay, Matthew. Here is how you get him in the palm of your hand. Call him pretty, tell him he’s charming.’ Like Matt was some padawan at Jay-manipulation.
