Her eyes darted wildly as sweat formed on her forehead. The belt began shifting upwards the more she forced the light to come off. A few seconds won’t kill her. Qi shook her head, the thought dissolving instantly. A few seconds of being unguarded could cost her her life. She wasn’t fighting for herself. She was only fighting for her group.
Stupidly enough, right after saying that– she glanced down as a curse slipped out of her lips.
Instantly– footsteps rang out in the empty chamber– startling Qi out of focus as panic stirred within her. Her head and her hand snapped back to position. She was so sure no one was here, now here she was. If she hadn’t glanced down, if she had just waited for another second, she would have been more prepared.
OR
TangQi but in the COA setting and Qi didn't know if Tang Si was alive or not.

The familiar smell of fragrant wax and herbs coddled her like a secure blanket, easing the tension in Tang Si’s shoulders as she began to glide effortlessly across her abode with practiced ease, drifting from cupboard to cupboard as she unpacked her haul. She was out in the town market with Qi when they saw the innocent acquaintance of theirs suffer horribly. Tang Si looked at the jar of jam in her palm as she clenched her fist, steeling her resolve and shelving into the designated spot.

The manor burns down. Orpheus, to the best of Norton’s, Plinius’, and Miss DeRoss’ knowledge, is caught up in it. Norton is wildly, exceedingly lucky he is not.
It’s the second or third time it’s burned down, apparently. It’s hard to keep up with what Miss DeRoss is saying, and with his head swimming from the blood loss it all kind of washes over him anyways. He leans heavily on both the women’s shoulders, barely managing to keep his feet under him. Distantly, he feels bad about it—both Plinius and Miss DeRoss are smaller than him, and he’s always weighed nearly fifteen stone even when he was starving. There’s blood dripping off of all three of them. He’s not sure what’s theirs and what’s his.
He’s also not sure why they pulled him out of the dirt. He’s not sure why they bothered. Wouldn’t it make more sense for them to just save themselves? It’s what he would have done, in their place. It’s what he thought Plinius would have done.
For Miss DeRoss, it’s hard to say.
It takes a year to pick up the pieces and start to heal.

Alice swallowed, finally mustering the courage to reach forward and grab Melly’s hand. It was hard and cold to touch–like a statue……or a corpse.
Alice shook the latter thought out of her head, dragging herself forward, resting her head against Melly’s chest, feeling the cold skin underneath her hold as she breathed out with an open mouth, “You really do still smell the same….” Alice, eyes closed, chuckled weakly, “....a little bit at least…..” She murmured, “Sweet like honey……”
“Melly….” Alice murmured, voice a little lost amidst all the thoughts buzzing in her head, “.....why have you locked me in here?”

Strange things have been happening in the life of Journalist Alice DeRoss. Following an incident in her garden....where she rescued an injured butterfly from within a thorny rose bush, it seems her days have taken the most odd turn. At first, she chooses to ignore them, attributing the strangeness to perhaps her own forgetfulness, and maybe a little bit of negligence.
However, when the oddities seem to be only multiplying in number and extent, Alice finds herself unable to merely ignore it all--- and these tiny invisible voices in her garden seem to be way too excited while talking about her, and why are there flowers in her garden that she never planted? And this soothing music that lulls her to sleep on insomniac nights.....
It seems Alice has incurred the affection of more than just plants and flowers.

“I can feel you,” a long tongue curled from Melly’s mouth, licking a slow trail up Alice’s neck as she huffed, “so desperate that you use your body for the words you cannot say.” The hand that had wiped away her tears slid down to her belly, fabric tearing as her claws dug into the waist of Alice’s skirt. “I can feel you wanting to keep me inside. Pulling me in, suctioning me like an animal in heat.”
Alice is dragged into the basement where she finds out that this new side of Melly has quite... interesting parts.

She received no response. She did not need one. She could feel the amusement thrumming in the air, threaded like music through her every breath, the phantom eyes watching her silently. Martha grit her teeth.
"Leave," she said, stopping, "me alone." If Martha opened her mouth just right, she would be able to taste the inaudible laughter on her tongue, the smooth glide of those words, you don't really want that, dear, do you? "You're following me. I know you are. Face me or leave."
Martha was not graced with a reply. Not yet. She wasn't satisfied yet, Martha knew this, she was a sly little thing, serpentine, and she did not like to stop until she got what she wanted. Martha closed her eyes and sighed. "Just stop lurking, for God's sake." Another silent moment, another expectant moment, and Martha gave in. "Evelyn."

Summary
Journalist Alice DeRoss is given the opportunity to interview the recently widowed wife of a well-known entomologist who died in a mysterious accident. Melly Plinius, an entomologist herself, is mysterious and reserved but Alice isn't disheartened, she finds the other woman as fascinating as one could be. And through a series of conversations, she ends up befriending her.
However, as Alice and Melly's friendship develops further and Alice learns more about the entomologist than she had ever imagined, it seems her initial perception of Melly may have been too simple. This was a woman who was more complicated than words could describe and despite all odds, she finds herself being drawn to the woman that was Melly Plinius.
