Carol freezes at the title, sucking in a quick breath before covering it with a small chuckle, “You can call me Carol if you’re about to make me a drink.”
There’s a twinkle in Zosia’s eyes that makes Carol’s stomach burn as she attempts the question again, “Can I make you a drink, Carol?”
Carol immediately wishes she’d never told Zosia to use her first name.

Carol shrugs. "I mean, that sounds better than hoping Koumba won't be relocating his next strip-poker night in your current bed, so... sure."
Zosia sways a little, hips first, hands clasped in front of her. The sash of her robe dances with her waist, and Carol’s hands twitch by her sides - imagine holding it like a leash, or weaving the silk under her flesh.
"Okay."

Summary
Even now, days later, she hears the buzzing. The frequency of the hive. When Zosia was joined, her head was full to the brim. It was a feeling larger than self, it couldn’t be described really. Now, she’s empty and the empty space in her head would vibrate, as if calling out for mercy. Calling for rescue from the hive. And Zosia would try to push the sound away.

Summary
The concept of suffering a separation while in the midst of the magnitude of the Joining was... disconcerting, to say the least.
Zosia had been claimed and had been discarded. But even after that, in amidst of sleepless nights soaked by whisky, Zosia was still needed – in safe doses and at safe distant – for Carol Sturka and all her contradictions.

“To start, your name,” Zosia said. “And then maybe, I don’t know, why you’re here, what you do, a fun fact about yourself, things like that.”
The woman gave her an incredulous look.
“You wanna do fucking icebreakers right now?”

Another glass down, her seventh. Maybe eighth? She’d stopped keeping track when Zosia started pouring. She pursed her lips when the heavy glass hit the table, eyed Zosia expectantly like she might take it all back. She wanted it, wanted Zosia to want it without the ‘we’ telling her she had to. Whatever collective that made decisions for her had no place between Carol’s hands and her skin, Zosia’s reflex and Carol’s will to locate her within them.
“You don’t mind?”
The chair creaked when Zosia shifted her weight—a screw Carol had never gotten around to adjusting. “I like it,” Zosia said quietly. “When you hurt me.”

Carol had thought that she was done experiencing fresh horrors. What a nightmare it is to realize that she is not. “Oh, god.” She says.
“Oh, god,” Zosia agrees.
After they manage to break Zosia free of the hive, Zosia and Carol try to navigate the field of landmines that is their relationship.

She had anticipated being the hottest person at the party, had planned on taunting Helen with what she’d given up. But her ex-wife has shown her up. Now she’s the one filled with longing and regret and a building heat in her core. She almost walks out of the party then and there, judgmental looks be damned.
It would’ve been better, if that’s what she had done.
