The men talked. Occasionally, one of them would laugh warmly, a low, comfortable sound. Tezzeret’s thighs began to burn from maintaining the position, and his stomach muscles tightened further, protesting such a long, unmoving strain. Even his insides began to twitch, and his jaw ached to the teeth from how tightly he kept it clenched.
Time passed in heavy, hot, increasingly smoky increments until eventually, the visitor’s voice shifted, becoming almost conversational again.
“Quite well behaved,” he remarked, his tone that of appraising a well-made machine.
“He learns very quickly,” his mentor replied, a note of quiet pride in his tone. “Very, very quickly. Sometimes I can’t come up with enough to keep him occupied. I wouldn’t want him running away.”
