“Every time I close my eyes, I’m remembering. Faces, voices. People I’ve killed.” Bucky’s voice comes muffled, meat and bone and thermal fabric between the words and Steve’s ears. And the words still land like blows. “I’m a Goddamn plague upon the Earth, Steve. I can’t hurt you again.”
“You won’t. And Hydra won’t ever get near you again.” Steve says it like a spell, like a geas, like he’s gonna bend the fabric of the universe to his will. It’s a vow, binding as anything ever said in front of a priest. “I will raze the Goddamn Earth until Hydra ain’t so much as a Goddamn smear.”
Bucky breathes out, slow and controlled. “I want to believe that.”
Steve leans in and presses chapped lips to the centre of Bucky’s brow. “Believe me.”
