Summary
Mia Grierson moves to Bucharest, Romania to attend a prestigious art school. While she is there, she meets another American at a cafe, Ethan, with whom she has an instant connection. Ethan, a single father, is taking his young daughter back to America following the disintegration of his relationship with the child's mother. Ethan and Mia exchange information and agree to meet after Mia returns to America.
Mia's final semester in Romania proves more bizarre than she ever could have guessed, however. During a trip to the Romanian countryside, she encounters a number of appalling and simultaneously beguiling monsters, one of whom alters Mia's life--and body--forever.
Inspired by what she learns in the village, Mia agrees to work alongside Mother Miranda, the leader of the village "monsters" who, to Mia's way of thinking, is using the Megamycete's powers for worthy goals. The two women grow close, but that closeness is eventually made complicated when Miranda gives Mia one task she fears she cannot perform: eliminate Ethan Winters and bring his young daughter back into Miranda's custody. For the first time, Mia's allegiances are conflicted.
