Cassie screws her eyes shut, fighting through to join the distraction. “Fucking idiot set his deck, and then his house, on fire. It was over a hundred degrees out there, and this guy decides to grill? I was getting the dog.”
Dana goes back to the stitches, and the questions. “You got the dog? Why, Mr July, I underestimated you.”
Cassie laughs, or maybe sobs. Cassie laughs or sobs.
“Yeah, I got the dog. Got this trophy too. Aren’t I lucky?”
Dana laughs at that, glancing up to look at Cassie. “I’d say I’m pretty lucky, actually. A strapping young firefighter lands in my ER and demands I stick them back together? My, my, what a lucky day.”

A discreet chuckle catches her attention on the other side. The elusive sales attendant has moved. Madeline pushes herself on her tiptooes to study her between the displays. She’s a little older than most of her colleagues on the floor. She’s not old—God, no—but she looks old enough to be noticeable as such. Her copper hair is curled softly on her shoulders, her dark frames slip down her slightly hooked nose as she displays a considerable amount of effort to disappear behind a tower of fake serum bottles. She is the only person in the store who hasn’t looked over twice at her, or perhaps she has but hasn’t cared enough to show it. This annoys Madeline deeply.
So it’s only natural that she should descend on her and plant herself on her heels before her.

The unspoken suggestion sends a frisson down her spine anyway, and despite her better judgement—she’s completing a major life transition still in progress, she has to leave soon, this is a stranger, she has bigger things to focus on, but she’s so lonely—she leans into it. “That so?”

Madeline feels reassured by her appearance, by her obvious and objective shortcomings. But once she finishes examining Lucy, she meets her eyes. Eyes that are big and brown and blinking up at her, making this woman seem so innocent and sweet.
That may be a problem.
Madeline quickly pushes the feeling down and says, with unconcealed disgust, “You’re her? They told me she was pretty.”
“I—” Lucy blinks. Who talks like that to other people? Entitled actresses, she supposes. “I am pretty,” she says, not quite as indignant as she ought to be; she’s taken back by this woman’s impertinence.
“Hm. In a sort of…mousy hippie way, maybe,” Madeline replies, wrinkling her nose. “You’re certainly not pretty the way I am.”
“Well, who could be?” Lucy replies with a soft laugh, rather in awe of this woman, obnoxious as she may be.
